The Glen Carbon Coast Guard Station was established in 1916. The station is located on the east side of the river at the mouth of the Carbondale River. The original building, which is still in use today, was arected by local Congregationalist priest and town trustee Rev. John Larkin. In 1942, the Coast Guard Station moved to its current location on what is now Route 66 just north of Glen Carbon Village. In 1957, an addition to the station was built that included a harbor and several accommodations for officers and their families. In 1969, Glen Carbon became a city and in 1984 it passed a resolution establishing a municipal coast guard department. On October 1, 1984, the village voted to establish its own coast guard department with full funding from the city budget. Since then, Glen Carbon has been responsible for all aspects of coastal security including law enforcement; environmental protection; and recreational boating and fishing interests as well as providing support services such as firefighting and rescue operations.

Glen Carbon is a small town in the far north-central corner of Illinois, about seventy miles from the state capital of Springfield. It is known for its coal mines and for being home to the world's largest wind turbine farm. The town has a population of about 2,000 people. Glen Carbon was founded in 1847 by James H. Glenn and his wife, Sarah A. Glenn. The Glenn family operated a tannery until 1861 when they became the first company to mine coal at Glen Carbon proper. In 1865, they built their first mill which still stands today as one of Illinois' most important economic landmarks. The Glenns were among the earliest settlers in what would become Illinois and were influential in developing the state's economy and society. They served as members of various local governmental bodies and through their contributions helped make Glen Carbon an important community during its early years. The Glenns also contributed significantly to future political growth in Illinois by donating land to create two townships: One on the west side of Chicago River (later called Glen Ellyn) and another on the east side (later called Wheeling). These townships would later form much of rural central Illinois, giving rise to nearby cities like Carbondale, Aurora, Peoria and Normalville.

Glen Carbon was a small, isolated community in eastern Illinois during the early 1800s. It is now a ghost town, located about 20 miles northwest of Carbondale. Glen Carbon's beginnings can be traced back to 1811 when two families from Kentucky came to the area and began farming. By 1818, the settlement had grown to include 10 households and three schools. The first store built in Glen Carbon was operated by Nicholas Foster. In 1852, the village was renamed Glen Carbon after John A. Glenn, an oilman who contributed financially to its development. In 1870, Glen Carbon became the county seat of Knox County; however, it never grew large enough to become a municipality. The last resident of Glencarbon died in 1910. Today only ruins remain of the original log homes and schools dating from the 1840s still standing today on rural farmland near Carbondale.
