Glen Carbon was platted on February 15, 1847 by John A. Glen and James Mclaughlin. The name is derived from a nearby mountain called "Carbon" because it was the first coal mine in this area. Coal mining stopped in Glencarbon after World War II due to competition from other mines in the area. The community developed slowly until the late 1960s when a new shopping center and high school were built. In 1984, Glenn Carbon became one of the first communities in McLean County to adopt an ordinance that guarantees voting rights to citizens of color (African Americans and Latinos). In 2000, Glenn Carbon voters approved an ordinance that bans smoking within 1,000 feet of any public building or playground. Glen Carbon is a small town in central Illinois, United States. The population was 1,041 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Bloomington–Normal, Illinois Metropolitan Statistical Area. Glen Carbon has been inhabited by Native American peoples for over 12,000 years. The first Europeans to visit the area were French traders who called it La Rochelle in 1668. In 1819, a group of British settlers from Lancaster County arrived and named the community Glen Carbondale after theircarbon-based industry in Scotland. By 1825, the village had grown to include a school and about eighty homes. In 1871, when Carbondale became an independent city, Glen Carbon voted to join it as well. The city was renamed Glen Carbon on November 3 that year in honor of General David Hunter Stonington who died while commandeering USS Constitution during the Mexican-American War and was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his actions that day. During World War I (1914-18), carbondale played an important role in training soldiers for war against Germany and Austria-Hungary. More than 2,500 local residents served in military units throughout World War I; many received medals for their service including several members of the City Council who received awards from President Woodrow Wilson himself on July 4th 1917 as part of America's National Day program honoring American patriots across all colors and stripes
