Geneva, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,567 at the 2010 census. Geneva was platted in 1853 and named after Geneva, Switzerland. It became a city in 1901 and remains one today. The Erie Canal passed through Geneva and led to its growth as a manufacturing center during the early 20th century. In 1948, the city of Geneva merged with Champaign-Urbana to form the present-day Illini Union College District. The original village of Geneva was located on the west side of what is now State Street between Third and Fourth Avenues; it consisted of two blocks long and had a single storey house on each side of the street. A second phase of development began about 1855 when John Ralston donated land for an academy which would educate Swiss refugees who had fled their homes during the California Gold Rush. The first school building was built on this site; it functioned as an academy until 1872 when it became home to Geneva High School which served students from grades 7-12 until 1945 when it closed due to budgetary reasons. A new high school structure was constructed in 1907 on land donated by Edwin Calkins; it operated as Ohlone High School until 1957 when it became part of Champaign-Urbana Community Schools (CUC). Geneva is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. Geneva was founded on April 12, 1837, by John A. Hnilos and his wife Augusta P. Hnilos, who named it for the Swiss city of Geneva. It became an incorporated town on December 15, 1852. On November 14, 1865, Geneva fell victim to Union General Ulysses S. Grant's Marching Orders Expedition during the American Civil War in which 1,500 men and boys were massacred by Confederate forces at Hiwassee Creek Bridge over the Ottawa River; this event is still commemorated with a public holiday in Geneva each year.
