The National Guard in Galesburg, Illinois was formed on November 15, 1861, by the state of Illinois. The first units were organized at a Officers' training camp near Vandalia and from there they arrived in Springfield to help with the Civil War. After the war ended, many soldiers returned home but some remained in Springfield as part of the National Guard to keep things going. In 1865, the National Guard was disbanded and its service members were sent back to their states. However, when Congress passed the Posse Comitatus Actreference to these military men without citizenship who had served in the Union army during the war- this led to many of these soldiers being called back into service and now lines up at local armories across America.
