Galesburg is a small town in Illinois, located on the banks of the River Des Plaines. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Galesburg was first settled by farmers in 1837 and became a town in 1848. The name Galesburg comes from George IL Spencer who built a log cabin here in 1838. In 1865, an act to create a new township was passed and Galesburg residents voted to become one of sixteen townships in Cook County. On October 15, 1868, Galesburg voters ratified an ordinance creating the city of Chicago and electing its first mayor, John Paulding.
