Galesburg is a city in Hancock County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,597 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Hancock County and the only city in Hancock County. Galesburg has been home to a variety of businesses and industries since its incorporation as a town in 1847. Over time, Galesburg has become an important center for education and professional services. The first inhabitants of what would become Galesburg were Native American nations such as the Potawatomi and Shawnee. The first European settler to arrive in what would become Galesburg was John Sachem from New York in 1817. He founded a trading post on the banks of the Chicago River which he named "Sagamore". The post served as a base from which Sachem and his followers could trade with other tribes along the river's length. In 1822, Sachem's son-in-law, Daniel Drake, arrived from Canada with his family to purchase land east of Galesburgh on present day Elm Street. Drake started construction on what would become Drake University in 1824 and opened it up to students soon after. By 1830, many other settlers had joined Drake University including Nathan Hale who became one of America's most prominent generals during World War II; Hannibal Hamlin who founded Chicago State Normal School; George Armstrong Custer who fought against General Perfecter at Little Bighorn; Jonathan Edwards who taught at Harvard College before becoming pastor at First Baptist Church in Boston; Cyrus McCormick who created harvests that allowed farmers to produce more food than they ever thought possible; Samuel Morse who developed technology that allowed Telegraph Line Company wires throughout North America to be connected; John Fitch whose company built Beaver Dam Dam Reservoir near Moline IL while also developing ways for water trucks to navigate rivers without bridges

In 1942, the Coast Guard established its own airmobile force and began providing air support for the United States Army in World War II. The National Marine Fisheries Service was added as a partner in 1986 and today, the Coast Guard is one of 17 Federal agencies that make up NOAA. Galesburg, Illinois is a city in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,362 at the 2010 census. Galesburg is the county seat of McLean County. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The land that would become Galesburg was first settled by farmers in 1809. In 1834, General John Fremont explored the area and named it after his home town of Galesburg, Illinois in England. The first post office was established in 1835 and was known as New Salem until it changed its name to Galesburgh in 1847. The first store on Main Street opened in 1836. In 1865, the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad extended its line from Carbondale to Galesburg and formed a partnership with the Indiana Central Railway Company to develop this new town into an important rail junction and industrial center for central Illinois. In 1870–71, construction began on what would be called "the Capitol", which would serve as the headquarters of both companies until it burned down in 1908. By 1880, over 25 businesses had been built within what is now downtown Galesburg; today only one remaining building from that period still stands: The First National Bank Building (now occupied by JCPenney). During World War II, parts of Galesburg were auxiliary centers for manufacturing industries such as aircraft production at nearby Carbondale and Beechcraft Aircraft Plant No.. 3 (later renamed Republic Aviation), water-cooled V-8 engines for auto racing at Hollywood Park Racetrack near Decatur and other heavy industry including shipbuilding at Beardstown Shipyards off Highway 60 south of town; these activities supported up to 1 million people during wartime while also creating thousands of jobs outside of war-related employment opportunities throughout central Illinois On July 15th 1948 Ulysses S Grant's remains were interred within Elmhurst Cemetery east of downtown Galesburg when he became President George Washington's final resting place outside Washington D C after yearslong speculation about his location following his death at Mount Vernon plantation on April 14th 1793 . After more than 50 years without definitive proof or confirmation that Grant actually died here , rumors circulated around town for many decades before finally being confirmed by an examination done by scientists performed by University Of Illinois 's Laboratory Of Anthropology dated October 8th 1978 which determined that Grant did die here some time between April 14th 1793 – October 8th 1978 but most likely prior to August 29th 1792 when his body was interred within Elmhurst Cemetery east of downtown
