It is a small city of about 30,000 people, and it has a rich history dating back to 1811. The first white settlers in Galesburg arrived in 1811, when Captain Ezra Stowe landed on Long Island. He and his group of twenty-six men journeyed northward and founded what would become Galesburg on October 20, 1811. The town was named for General David Harriman (1776-1847), who had commanded the forces that destroyed Fort Dearborn during the War of 1812. In 1814, Galesburg became one of the original sixteen townships in Cook County. At that time, Cook County consisted only of parts of Upper Indiana and Lower Michigan. In 1835, Galesburg attained incorporation as a city with a population of 507 people. The following year saw another significant milestone for Galesburg: it became the first municipality in Illinois to be established as part of the Chicago Portage Railroad system! Galesburg continued to grow throughout its early years; by 1840, it had reached an estimated population size of 1,500 people! However, World War II spelled trouble for Glesburgh; during that time period (1939-1945), much activity took place at nearby Willowbrook Arsenal – which was then located just south of town – due to World War II production requirements at that site. Despite this noise and traffic disruption caused by wartime production operations at Willowbrook Arsenal, however, overall life went on relatively smoothly within Glesburgh until its final days; by 1945, almost all traces Of The Old Town had long since disappeared!
