The United States Air Force was founded on August 25,1917 and its first mission was to provide air support for the war in Europe. In 1945, after World War II ended, the USAF became known as the American Air Forces. Today, the USAF is one of the largest and most diverse militaries in the world with more than 182,000 active duty members and nearly 9300 civilians who work within its military structure. The USAF has a rich history that can be traced back to 1917 when America's first air force was established as part of World War I effort. From then until 1945, the USAAF operated under a variety of names including: American Expeditionary Forces (AEF), First World War Service Command (FWSC), Second World War Service Command (SWSC), European Theatre Air Component (EtAC) and Ninth Air Force. Throughout its history, however, the USAF has always been associated with Galesburg Illinois- home to three successive fighter wings-the 3rd Fighter Wing which was activated on June 16th 1947; The 1st Tactical Reconnaissance Wing which was activated on October 12th 1948; and finally, The 2nd Tactical Reconnaissance Wing which was activated on April 15th 1949. Each wing served primarily during different wars but all three have had some connection to each other through their predecessors or successors. In 1947-48 there were several changes within the USAF when it became apparent that jet aircraft would play an increasingly important role in warfare-the Third Reich had just deployed jets into battle against Russia while Japan also fielded their own such planes; meanwhile RAF pilots were becoming better trained in jet flying so conversion units were needed to arm RAF squadrons with these new machines while also providing flight training for USAAF pilots. Withdrawing from Germany required redeployment of units across various states so by 1948/49 there were four wings available for assignment: III Bomber Command's VIII Bomber Command's XX Bomber Command's Fifteenth Air Force's Fourteenth Army Group commanded by LtGen Curtis LeMay - all equipped with Boeing B47s! By this time III Bomber Command had become operational as Strategic Air command whilst VIII BomberCommand became operational as Bombardment Command whilst XX BomberCommand became operational as Tactical Air commands respectively...these changes reflect a trend towards squrched commands working together where necessary rather than having separate wings operating independently...in effect this meant that strategic bombing now fell under bomber command whereas ground forces could be used for ground attack missions if deemed necessary or desired.- consequently bombers could now be sent anywhere in Europe quickly without having to transit through Germany.... Whilst XVAF continued operations over France alongside Fifth Army Group during May & June 1946 they soon turned their attention east once more when Stalin announced his plans for a major offensive into Western Europe Operation Crossroads scheduled to start on July 1st 1946...XVAF swooped down upon eastern Poland while Fifth Army Group moved northwards towards Germany despite heavy opposition from Polish partisans who successfully fought off Soviet tanks and artillery fire throughout much of July & August 1946...during July & August XVIAF flew 4500 sorties compared to only 350 sorties flown by RAF controllers...... moreover although piston powered fighters did perform admirably against medium range targets such as railway bridges etc crosswinds caused great difficulty reaching targets at high altitude....... nevertheless due largely to excellent aerial intelligence data collected by IXAF Allied airfields located near Warsaw provided vital battlefield information allowing XIIFAircraft flown over waters near Rheinelandstadt below 50NMto target German armoured positions inside Holland..... overall XVAF played an important role both offensively (& defensively) during Crossroads

Galesburg is a city in northern Illinois, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Rock County and home to the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Galesburg were Dutch farmers from Wisconsin who established a trading post on the Kankakee River in 1695. By 1812, however, the area had become part of France because of its strategic location midway between Fort Dearborn and Chicago on Lake Michigan. In 1818, French traders founded a fur trading post here known as La Salle's Post near present-day Carbondale; this outpost served as an important link between French Canada and Great Lakes trade. In 1836, Springfield was organized as a town within Rock County when it was created from parts of Champaign and Urbana counties. The firstpostmaster for Galesburg was Wm. Higginson; his office opened in 1840. A schoolhouse was built here in 1841 by subscription from local landowners and citizens; it served as the primary educational institution for the community until it burned down in 1863 during Reconstruction following American Civil War efforts to expand slavery into Illinois Territory (eventually becoming Iowa). During World War II, Galesburg played an important role as one of five military training areas located within Ia Dragoons National Guard Base (later Camp Evans) east of Streator; these sites were used to provide training for soldiers destined for combat abroad. Following World War II, Galesburg experienced rapid growth with numerous businesses opening up including several medical dispensaries and hospitals including Northwestern Memorial Hospital which became one of America's largest healthcare providers after merging with Allina Health Partners Incorporated in 1984. That same year saw also the introduction of mass transit with Amtrak providing service to campus from downtown through LaSalle Street Station on University Avenue until 2003 when that line was replaced by METRO Bus Lines' Park Street Line which runs along Park Street between LaSalle Street Station and University Avenue serving primarily student housing developments adjacent to Park Stadium/Chesson Stadium bounded by Randolph Road on one side and Stadium Drive on another; since then there has been no service available beyond Randolph Road bounding Campus Residence Halls directly opposite METRO Bus Lines ParkStreetLine stations only buses running to Stadium Drive outside those facilities serve Campus Housing developments adjacent to Metra tracks across Harwood Parkway bounding Campus buildings adjacent to North Side street
