Galesburg, Illinois is a town located in Grundy County, Illinois. The population was 5,874 at the 2010 census. Galesburg is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. It was founded in 1836 as a small village on the south bank of the Missouri River. The name “Galesburg” comes from a Dakota word meaning “border place.”
The first settlers in Galesburg were farmers who arrived by wagon train in 1836. By 1840, Galesburg had a few stores and about 100 residents. In 1846, General James Hays appointed George Rector as its first postmaster. A year later, Rector built the first public house in Galesburg.
During World War I, Galesburg served as an airfield for American forces engaged in operations along the Western Front. After the war ended, Galesburgh resumed its role as a town and began to grow rapidly with new arrivals from Europe and Asia. In 1925, it became one of 13 townships within Grundy County when it was formed from parts of three other townships: Athens Township (including parts of downtown Springfield), Carthage Township (including portions of Elmwood Park and Winnetka), and Prairie Township (including parts of Northaven).
In 1951–1954, during his term as Governor of Illinois, John F Kennedy visited Galesburgh on several occasions while he was campaigning for office.
