The Freeport Marine Terminal is a major harbor in Freeport, Illinois. It has been the center of maritime commerce in the city since 1892. The terminal has served as a stop on the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad, and was also used by the Great Lakes Steamship Company. The present-day marine terminals were built between 1906 and 1908. They are located on Portage Avenue between State Street and Washington Boulevard. In 1892, the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad extended its line to Freeport through a new tunnel under the Wabash River. The G&NW offered passenger service from downtown Chicago to Freeport for $1 per mile with one hour wait time. This allowed passengers to disembark at the G&NW's wharf and take public transportation to their destinations along the lake shoreline in town or on ships docked at Freeport Marina. At that time, there were only two commercial vessels moored at Freeport: a steamboat called "Cleveland" that operated year-round from Mayport (now part of Jacksonville), Florida; and an ice cream truck called "Pineapple" that transported goods during winter months from Decatur, Illinois toFreeport via Lake Michigan. In 1906, when construction began on what would become known as the marine terminals, it was announced that this would be "the most important development ever made in this city." At first glance, these new facilities may not have seemed terribly significant—just more warehouses where cargo could be unloaded onto trucks and driven away—but over time they became central to Freeport's economy. The first wave of terminals was designed by architects William Hickey & Sons Ltd., who had previous experience designing shipping infrastructure for Great Lakes ships operating out of Detroit’s Amherstburg Harbour [1]. One reason these facilities were so successful was their innovative design: They consisted of three main sections – an Inner Harbor area which housed loading docks for large containers; an Outer Harbor complex which housed smaller vessels moored alongside larger containerized warships; and a Commercial District which housed small businesses providing services such as plumbing, accounting, advertising etc…. The museum was founded in 1978 by nine maritime historians, including three who were then marine gift experts. A significant portion of the museum’s collection comes from private collectors, but the museum also has a variety of objects donated by government agencies, businesses, universities, and other organizations.
