The history of the Freeport Army Ammunition Plant began in 1892 when a group of businessmen led by Capt. George M. Morton purchased land at what is now the intersection of Elm and First Streets for $2,000. The new plant was built on a site that had been used for grinding corn since 1847. The first ammunition was produced from local limestone in 1894. The plant grew quickly, and by 1908 it employed 1,500 workers. In 1919, the plant became part of the Chicago-based General Electric Company, which gave it its current name of GEA Freeport Ammunition Plant.GEA continued to produce ammunition until 1970, when it closed down due to financial troubles. Today, only a few remnant pieces of the old plant remain scattered around Freeport; however, they are open to public visitation during peak season.
