Freeport is a city in Macon County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,405 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is the county seat of Macon County. The first known permanent settler in Freeport was Nicholas Sargent who arrived in 1836. The first post office was established in 1837. By 1841 there were six businesses operating in Freeport: three stores, two blacksmiths, and one wharfmaster's shop. A sawmill was built on the river by John Buntin around 1840 and began producing lumber from local trees starting in 1846. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the river and its easy access to transportation including railroads and boats that transported goods between Chicago and points north. In 1870 Freeport had ten businesses with a total payroll of $1,027; by 1880 it had twenty-six companies with a payroll of $10,521; by 1890 it had forty-eight companies with a payroll of $25,913 In 1906 Freeport became an incorporated municipality with a population of 3,752 residents when it amalgamated with neighboring Monroe Township; afterward it continued to grow slowly but steadily as an unincorporated community until becoming fully annexed into Macon County in 1960 despite retaining its own government services for only eight years before being dissolved as part of larger county reorganization which included all suburban Cook Counties into one entity called Macon County
