Franklin Park is a small village in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 514 at the 2010 census. It is located on the northwest side of Chicago. The name is taken from James K. Polk, who served as President of the United States from 1845 to 1849 and was a resident of Franklin Township in Kane County. The first settler in Franklin Park was Abram Beaverson, who built a cabin on the present day site of the Village in 1837. By 1840, most of what is now Franklin Park had been settled when John Pritzker bought land eastward from Beaverson for $5 per acre (in today's currency). Pritzker established himself as one of Chicago's leading businessmen and developed 150 acres (60 hectares) along with his neighbor Harry Hughes around which he built a large mansion still standing today – Pritzker House (now Habitat for Humanity Chicago). In 1846, Samuel Morse donated land to be used as a park; this became known as Morse Park after him and later became part of Frank Lloyd Wright's famous Prairie School architecture downtown. In 1870, John Daley founded Pullman Palace Company which operated two Pullman-owned hotels: Union Station and Shoreline Drive Hotel. When both properties were sold off in 1912, Pullman Manor became home to many prominent Chicagoans such as Fielding Huxley and Gustavus Adolphus Olmsted Jr., among others. In 1915, the city created an experimental forest preserve called Franklin Park Woods that extended across much of what is now Downtown Chicago; it remains one of the largest urban forest preserves remaining in North America today. One reason that Franklin Park has experienced relatively little development over time may have been its location near major transportation hubs like Midtown Manhattan or downtown Los Angeles but also because developers have always been hesitant to build near high crime areas or dense black neighborhoods where they could face potential religious opposition or legal challenges
