The United States Army deployed gifts to Franklin Park in Illinois during World War I. This gift history can be traced back to 1861 when the first Infantry Regiment of the Union was organized at Camp Chase, Indiana and marched down the road to Springfield, Illinois. The regiment disembarked at La Salle Island on October 25, 1861 and then marched northwestward through Chicago to Franklin Park. On December 15, 1861, General Lucius Clay ordered a detachment of artillery into camp near Franklin Park for training purposes. From this location artillerymen opened fire on November 6th against a Confederate battery located at Mount Hope Cemetery in Cook County. The shot killed one soldier and wounding three others; it was the first time American artillery had fired upon Confederate forces in Illinois. The gift of cannons from the Union army to Franklin Park began an event that would continue for many years. In 1881, the Illinois General Assembly authorized the formation of an artillery battalion in Franklin Park. The battalion was christened the "3rd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry" and was equipped with artillery pieces from different states. In 1886, the regiment became part of the 6th Brigade, 1st Division, United States Army. On November 11th 1898, during the Spanish-American War and following a request by General John J. Pershing for units to be sent to Cuba as part of his American Expeditionary Force, the 3rd Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry was mobilized and arrived in Havana on December 12th 1898. From there they participated in various maneuvers before finally disembarking at Santiago de Cuba on February 15th 1899. On April 9th 1899 they relieved elements of the 2nd Regiment New York Volunteers (7th Brigade) at Bayamon City where they remained until May 10th 1899 when they returned to their original unit assignment at Franklin Park. After garrison duty at Frankfort for several months they were ordered back to Havana on September 25th 1899 where they remained until October 4th 1900 when they retired from military service entirely.
Franklin Park is a large, suburban community located in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 21,611 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Franklin Park was first settled in 1847 as a small farmstead near what is now the intersection of Kimball and Irving streets. In 1881, it became an incorporated village. In 1925, it merged with the neighboring town of Hinsdale to form Franklin Park Township. In 1955, it became a full-time Municipality under the name "Cook County." The current name comes from then-President James K. Polk who dedicated a park in Franklin Park after his visit to that city during his campaign for president in 1844. The park contains both baseball and basketball fields as well as playgrounds and other recreational amenities for residents and visitors alike.
