Frankfort was a small, but important town in central Illinois during the early 1800s. The community was named for General James K. Polk and his wife, Margaret "Maggie" de Witt, who were natives of the town. The De Witt family had relocated to Frankfort from Greencastle, Indiana in 1812. The first settler in Frankfort was John Armstrong, who arrived in 1797. By 1810, there were thirteen settlers living in the town. In 1814, the United States Congress approved a land grant of 640 acres (2 km2) to William Bailey for his construction of a mill on the river near present-day downtown Frankfort. The community began to grow rapidly due to its location between two major rivers and its good transportation connections to other nearby settlements. In 1830, local residents voted to establish their own school system with Drury as the first superintendent. At that time, there were only three schools in central Illinois – one each at Cairo (northwest of Frankfort), Peoria (southwest of Frankfort), and Springfield – which made education very important for young people in the area. By 1840, there were over 500 residents living in Frankfort proper and sixty-six businesses operating within its boundaries alone. The population growth led to an increase in demand for infrastructure such as roads, bridges, water systems, etc., which necessitated larger homes and more space for businesses within town limits. This increased demand also caused prices for goods sold within town limits to rise above those outside it – furthering economic integration between different parts of central Illinois under one common roof.
