In 1871 Richard Muhlenberg established a flour mill on State Street northwest of town center with about 60 employees and began exporting flour to markets all over the United States as well as Europe. In 1886 he sold his interest in the mill to J H Weiland who operated it until its sale to Fritz Kuhn in 1922. In 1923 Kuhn donated 3 acres (10 ha) northeast of town square to build an extension to America's first high school called Stroud High School which opened September 15th, 1924). Frankfort was founded in 1795 by General James Wilkinson and the city was named for him. The first post office in Frankfort opened in 1806. In 1858, the Illinois General Assembly created the County of Franklin, which included Franksburg. The county was disbanded in 1861, and its lands were divided among other counties. In 1902, a new town was platted in what is now northwest Frankfort and it became known as Winchester.
