Frankfort, Illinois is a small city in the U.S. state of Illinois. It is located on the right bank of the Missouri River, about 15 miles (24 km) north of downtown Chicago. The population was 12,752 at the 2010 census. Frankfort's historical district contains many restored buildings from the 19th century and early 20th century that are now used as museums or for educational purposes. The city was founded in 1817 by George Washington Carver, who had come to trade with Native Americans in what is now Kansas Territory. Carver named his new town after his friend and mentor, General James K. Polk, who had won a decisive victory over Mexico at Hidalgo Creek in 1846. At first, most people in Frankfort lived near the river banks; but when railroads began to be built through this region they became increasingly urbanized and developed their own businesses and schools. In 1907, streetcar service reached Frankfort and made it a convenient place for residents to get around town; since then, it has been an important commercial center within its limits. Frankfort, Illinois is a small town in the northwestern corner of the United States. It is located on the east side of the Illinois River, about 25 miles northeast of Chicago. The population was 7,191 at the 2010 census. The Frankfort community began as a post office in 1820 and became a city in 1903. In 1907, it merged with neighboring cities Carbondale and Moline to form the present-day city of Frankfort. The area that now provides Frankfort with its name was first settled by Native Americans in early antiquity. A Mississippian culture village known as Cahokia stood here for centuries before being destroyed by European settlers inacan year 1000 CE. After Cahokia's destruction, Native Americans moved into this area and developed what would become Frankfort into an agricultural center after 1300 CE when they discovered fertile land west of the river. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Frankfort were French traders who explored this area during the 17th century. By 1673, English colonists had arrived and founded a trading post here called Fort George on the east bank of the Illinois River opposite present-day Carbondale. over time different areas within present-day Frankfort grew rapidly due to their proximity to trade routes and natural resources: manufacturing began appearing here around 1800; coal mining commenced operations soon afterwards; farming flourished because there was ample access to water and other resources; transportation grew more important as railroads linked these parts; finally, strong German influence led to cloth production becoming popular among local residents beginning in 1870 In 1881–82, one of America's most significant conflicts occurred when a group of farmers led by John Altman sought unsuccessfully to purchase 2 million acres (910 km2) along present day I-90 from Lake Michigan interests
