Fox Lake is home to the Fox Lake Naval Air Station, one of two naval air stations in Illinois. The other is Moody Field in Champaign County. The first people to live on what is now Fox Lake were the Potawatomi Indians. A post office was established at Fox Lake in 1854, and remained open until 1912. The name "Fox" was given to the lake by General George Washington Carleton as a present to his brother-in-law Colonel Nathan Bedford Forrest. In 1907, citrus farmers established a citrus orchard on what became known as White Sands Drive near current day Arlington Heights Road and State Street. In 1933, an all-weather airport was constructed on land owned by Harry Pritzker that presently houses Winnetka Airport. In 1942, World War II veteran Eddy Crayton donated land at White Sands Drive for use as a military airfield during the war years; this allowed Memphis Army Air Base (now Memphis International Airport) to be closed and used for training American troops instead which increased aviation traffic over Cook County from only three flights per week in 1940 to more than 100 flights per week by 1945 due to advances in aircraft technology. Accordingly, when President Franklin D Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9102 creating Chicago's first municipal water system on April 12, 1941 (the same day that construction began on both Chicagos LaSalle Street Subway Extension project and Jackson Park Tollway), he called for "a large body of fresh water available within easy reach of every city dweller." He directed local developers "to secure title thereto [FoxLake] immediately," noting that had they not done so "it would have been necessary either to farm out produce or build reservoirs." By 1946 foxlakefgw@applemail[1] had developed into FOXLAKEWATER INC., owning 320 acres surrounding the original acreage donated by Eddy Crayton--versus just 75 acres remaining after World War II according to federal records maintained at Chicagos City Hall archives).
