Forest Park is a large city in the state of Illinois, located on the right bank of the Mississippi River. The population was 24,536 at the 2010 census. Forest Park is one of the largest and most diverse cities in Illinois, with over 40 neighborhoods and villages. It is home to both the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and Northwestern University Law School. Forest Park also contains many important business districts including Midtown, North Side, South Side, West Side, East Side and Downtown. The city was founded by woodsmen in 1851 as a small settlement on an area that now includes part of northwest suburban Chicago. In 1870 it became a town when it was annexed by Chicago. The name "Forest Park" was chosen because it had been used for forest reserves since before any trees were logged there. The first post office opened in 1872 and later became known as "Chicago Heights". In 1901 Mayor John Doane merged two other towns into Forest Park: Humboldt (now Evanston) to the south and Argyle (now Addison) to the north; these towns had been separate entities since they were incorporated within Cook County but separately managed by their respective mayors until then. Forest Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, located on the northwest side of the Chicago metropolitan area. The population was 51,461 at the 2010 census. It was founded by George Stephenson in 1836 as a site for a new military post on land bought from the Chisholm family. Forest Park became an incorporated city in 1903. In 1978, it merged with neighboringnorwood to formthe current city of Forest Park. The first people to live in what is now Forest Park were several hundred pioneers who settled there around 1836 after purchase of lands from the Chisholm family. At that time much of southern Cook County was undeveloped and many Native American villages continued to exist well into the 19th century due to their immunity to European diseases and their access to natural resources such as timber and water. The first county seat for Cook County was built at Palatine (now Prospect Heights), but soon other towns began popping up along Lake Michigan and various railways connected them all together. By 1850, there were twenty-four towns in Cook County and two counties: Winnebago and DuPage. In 1836, Stephenson purchased 1,240 acres (500 ha) northeast of downtown Chicago from John Pritzker for $8 per acre ($2/ha). He named his new post "Fort Dearborn" after President John Quincy Adams's old home in Boston which he had visited while serving as Minister Plenipotentiary there during 1835-1837. As development increased along Northwest Expressway (later I-635) near present day Cicero Avenue and Fullerton Road, Fort Dearborn facility grew increasingly small; only about 350 men were stationed there at its peak in 1840.
