Forest Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 57,897 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was founded on December 4, 1837 by James K. Polk and his brother Franklin D. Roosevelt as a result of their acquisition of 1,000 acres (400 hectares) of land east of Chicago for $5 per acre ($4/$/ha). The city grew rapidly from its incorporation in 1847 until it reached its peak in 1900 with a population of 108,903. However, rapid growth caused problems such as lack of space and infrastructure and an increase in crime rates which led to the annexation of portions of neighboring townships during the 1920s. In 1930 Forest Park annexed parts of Ridgefield Township to form what would become known as Forest Park–Ridgefield Township. In 1990 the City Council voted to annex all remaining municipalities within Cook County into one municipality – making Forest Park the first municipal government in Illinois to be annexed into another municipality without prior consent from the original citizens or vote by referendum. Forest Park has been struggling economically since 2000 due to declines in manufacturing and traditional service industries that have left it reliant on services such as healthcare and education which have seen increases elsewhere in Cook County%. It was re-established in 1871 as the town of Glendale after being platted by George Stephenson and others as part of the new county. The population was 9,972 at the 2000 census. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 15,814. The forest that once thrived in Forest Park has been greatly reduced since it was first developed over 100 years ago. Today, only a small remnant remains of what used to be one of Chicago's most popular areas for recreation and nature observation. One interesting fact about this area is that it has also served as an important location for filming scenes from many movies and TV shows over the years including Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, demonstrates how much Forest Park has changedover time. In 1871 whenGlendale was established as a town, one reason for its choice may have been because residents were tired of living near Chicago's rapidly expanding city center on State Street. The site chosen for Glendale would eventually become one of its primary commercial strips with numerous businesses located along Elm Street - home to more than half a million people at its peak in 1916! Over time however, much change began to take place within Glendale itself which would culminate in its incorporation into Cook County in 1888. In 1902-04glendale experienced another large influx of settlers when two brothers named John Wirth purchased land adjacent to current day Forrest Park from Anthony Wayne Coyne Jr., father of then-Governor Rufus Mifflin Wayne. At this time there were still few public transportation options available so wagon trains brought goods and people directly from downtownChicago all the way down Insane Road to Glendale where they could be unloaded at three different points before continuing their journey back up Insane Road again! Today little remains remaining apart from some original street names and some early development buildings such as “The Gables” which housed both local grocery stores and lumber yards while other buildings included what is now known as Holy Name Cathedral School; aforementioned “Gables” also became home to Forest Preserve during World War II when military personnel needed shelter from air raids; today’s courthouse sits on land donated by philanthropist Drue Ladd who also founded Highland Park Cemetery nearby
