The first European settlers in what would become Fairview Heights were French traders who established a trading post near present-day Unionville in 1793. The post was abandoned by 1800 when the area became part of Ohio Territory. In 1814, General James K. Polk moved his headquarters from Greenvile to Normal City after routing Ulysses S. Grant's army during the Mexican-American War at Buena Vista Hill in Illinois Territory. General John A. Logan had been leading forces that fought at Buena Vista Hill and wanted to commemorate it by naming a hill in honor of his colleague and friend Polk. Logan recommended naming the hill "Polk" because he thought its name resembled that of President James K." The name stuck and today's community owes its start to pioneer farmers Nathaniel Myerson (1784-1853) and Levi Coffin (1801-1864). When normal city residents voted to annex more than half of McHenry County into their municipality on April 12, 1848, they did so knowing that they would have access to all local businesses including those run by farmers ceded to them without compensation through the "Allotment Act". At this time there were no schools within normal city limits; students had to attend centralized Normal School until 1875 when Normal City Schools opened with five classrooms and an enrollment of fifty students per grade level giving rise to one rumor that "the schools are good enough for everyone but rich people because they send their children toNormal City". In 1870s two families bought land adjoining modern day fairview heights; Providence Road & Elm Street ran east/west between these homes becoming town trustees later that year with full voting rights granted in 1871 when township boundaries were adjusted following annexation intonormal city limits - one of many changes made during Normal's growth while still under government control following America's Civil War days Of Reconstruction.). Fairview Heights is located on the north side of Chicago and bordered by Beaches to the west, Kedzie to the south, and Niles to the east. The town was founded in 1881 when Reverend John H. Wellborn moved from Peoria, Illinois to start a mission school in what is now Fairview Heights. The first post-office was opened in 1882. The first store was built on State Street around 1915 and closed about 1970; it was replaced by a post office called Shults which served until 2006. In 1885 banker John Daley donated land for a public park which became known as Park Boulevard (later renamed Roosevelt Park). In 1906 Mayor Edward Kelly announced plans for a new city line that would run through Cook County and make Fairview Heights part of Chicago; this plan never came to fruition due to public opposition. In 1923 Mayor James Byrnes proposed moving FairVIEW HEIGHTS out of Cook County onto his own island within Chicagoland so that he could reduce taxes; this proposal also never came to fruition because of public opposition. In 1955 Fairview Heights had 553 residents while Kedzie had 1,500 more people than Fairview Heights and Shults had 255 fewer people than either Kedzie or FairVIEW HEIGHTS combined according to the 2000 census data . However since then there has been an overall decrease in population in both villages with Kedzie having 471 residents as of 2018 whileFair View Heights has only 162 residents according as of 2020 . This decline can be largely attributed to gentrification activities taking place near Kedzie (a village adjacent unto fairway) where many people are moving into homes that were once owned by members of these two towns
