Fairview Heights is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 9,857 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1851 by John Hennepin and named for his sister-in-law, Mary Fairley. The first post office opened in 1855 and the first school in Fairview Heights was built in 1861. In 1868, two men who had been hired to clear land for a new railroad line walked across the property that would become Fairview Heights from McHenry County into Cook County and named it after themselves – George Washington Fairfield and Samuel ClemensFairbanks.
