The Fairview Heights Air Force Base, located in Fairview Heights, Illinois is home to the 337th Airlift Wing. The wing was born on November 1, 1947 when the 337th Bombardment Squadron was activated at Fairview Heights Municipal Airport. The squadron was equipped with Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress bombers and operated from that airport until 1959 when it moved to Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. In 1960, the squadron relocated again when FairVIEW HEIGHTS Municipal Airport became Fairview Heights AFB. On July 15, 1961, the nucleus of what would become the 337th Airlift Wing were activated at Wright-Patterson AFB when the 367th Troop Carrier Squadron arrived from Macon AFB, Georgia. From there until its disbanding on December 31st 1991 it was one of six bombardment wings within United States Air Forces in Europe (USAAF Euforia). In 1949, Fairview Heights became home to one of America’s first operational fighter wings when the 61st Fighter Wing was activated at Macalester College. Today, the 61st FW is responsible for providing strategic airlift to numerous federal government agencies and militaries across North America. The 62nd Tactical Airlift Wing also arrived in Fairview Heights in 1949 and has been supporting local military units ever since. In 1997, the wing relocated its headquarters from Rockford, Illinois toFairburn AFB outside Atlanta, Georgia due to infrastructure upgrades necessary for Joint Base Andrews expansion projects. Today,the USAF operates more than 350 aircraft with a mission that includes global Reach & defend operations as well as unique capabilities such as airborne refueling and electronic warfare programs worldwide.
Fairview Heights is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first settlement in Fairview Heights was made by farmers who arrived from New York State in 1837. In 1840, the village of Fairview Township was organized and named for Fairway Road which ran through it. The name changed to Fairview Heights in 1881 when a large block of land purchased by Captain Elisha Dearborn for $10,000 was donated to the township. The Dearborn family had come from Vermont and were interested in developing what they saw as an agricultural area between Chicago and Rockford. The original school in Fairview Heights was built on East Union Street in 1892-93. It served grades K-8 until 1912 when a new elementary school was built on South Side Avenue across from the old one. In 1916, a new high school (now called John Marshall High School) opened on West Eisenhower Boulevard adjacent to modern day Glenwood Park Zoo. That same year also saw the merger of two other villages – Douglasville and Mount Prospect – into the town of Fairview Heights.
