Fairview Heights is a census-designated place in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 4,812 at the 2010 census. Fairview Heights is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was platted in 1892 by George and Clara Goodspeed and named for their sister, Fairfield Heights (now a neighborhood of Chicago). It became a village in 1903 and then a city in 1924. Its boundaries were enlarged to form the current township of Cook on February 14, 1909. The first post office opened at Fairview on November 15, 1892. In 1925 Charles Auerbach founded the Chicago Symphony Orchestra here and made it his headquarters during its early years; he also built many of the homes around which the orchestra later gathered. Other famous residents include Eleanor Roosevelt (1927–2008), Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger (Pope Benedict XVI), Mayor Richard M. Daley (2011-2015) and Rosemary Clooney (1945–present). In the early 1920s, the United States Air Force was formed as a result of the American entry into World War I. The service was created to support aerial warfare and the bombardment of enemy targets. During its early years, the USAF flew a variety of aircraft including Sopwith Camel, P-51 Mustang and Lockheed Electra. In 1941, America became involved in World War II and the USAF was renamed as the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF). TheAAF played an important role in both world wars by conducting strategic bombing raids against German targets. After war ended in 1945, many servicemen were discharged or left military service to return home. However, some airmen remained with the USAF through various incarnations such as contractor units and unit deployments overseas throughout operations dating back to 1948 when NATO began its Operation Overlord offensive against Nazi Germany. The postwar era saw several changes for the USAF; it became an all-weather air force with Boeing 707s and Beechcraft 1900s becoming its staple assets for strategic bombing missions over Europe. Inactivated fighter wings were reactivated during Vietnam while others such as Tactical Air Command (TAC) were established to provide fighter cover for ground forces during strategy campaigns like Operation Rolling Thunder or Desert Storm. However, TAC’s closure in 1991 effectively eliminated USAAF involvement in combat operations outside of Northern Asia until recent times whenbered jets have been used in exercises with Japanese counterparts at bases on Okinawa Island. Overall, there has been significant growth within both uniformed services since WWII while also experiencing significant technological advances that have led to more powerful planes and improved targeting capabilities across all services. Fairchild, who named it after Fairfield Township in Connecticut where he came from. The village grew rapidly during the 1920s and 1930s due to its location near Chicago's manufacturing districts and its close proximity to Interstate 95 and other major highways. During World War II, Fairview Heights played an important role in the production of munitions for the war effort by producing rubber tires and aluminum sheeting. After the war, Fairview Heights experienced rapid growth due to suburbanization and immigration; today it has become one of Illinois' most diverse villages with a wide variety of cultures represented. The church built a school and a chapel here before moving to its current location on Fairview Avenue in 1907.
