Evergreen Park is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 26,653 at the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Chicago after Chicago Heights and home to the University of Chicago (UChicago), one of the world's top universities. The name "Evergreen" comes from an old growth forest on the east side of town that was cut down in 1837 by General James Wilkinson for his military plantation near Moline. The first settler in Evergreen Park was John Addison Mead who arrived about 1800. He built a cabin on what is now Fuller Avenue and named it Meadville after himself and his family. The first post office in Evergreen Park was established in 1824 and calling itself Addisonville until 1828 when it changed its name to Evergreen because of its location on the edge of a large evergreen forest. In 1836, General James Wilkinson purchased land east of present-day Evergreen Park from Perry & Adams for $2,500 which he renamed Old Miami Road. He laid out streets and erected public buildings including a courthouse, jail, schoolhouse, storehouses and barns. In 1840 he acquired more land west of present-day Evergreen Park from George Rogers Clark for $4,000 which he named Goodhue Road after himself and other prominent citizens from Illinois’ Northwest Territory at that timeincluding future UChicago president Andrew Dickson Whiteheadand founded what became known as Dearborn Heights (). There were several other early settlements nearby before becoming part of downtown Chicago. On December 12th, 1847 commissioners appointed by Mayor John Pritzker convened to establish a village within limits proposed by Commissioners David Sibley & others adjoining Watertown Village on the north side of Lake Michigan opposite Milwaukee (), with boundaries defined by Ravenswood Avenue on one side and Halsted Street on the other (). After much discussion they voted 3–0 to recommend inclusion within city limits rather than remain separate villages as proposed but without any action taken until late May or early June1848when Pritzker moved into City Hall following his inauguration as mayor ().
