Evergreen Park is a small city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 381 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was founded on November 3, 1871 by George Washington Carver and his wife Lilla Morton Carver. At first it was known as "Carvertown", after the family's only son and namesake, George Washington Carver Jr. The name change came about because of community sentiment that "Evergreen" represented a more coniferous-looking tree than "Carvertown". In 1892, Evergreen Park was annexed by the City of Chicago; however, it retained its own government until 1961 when it became a part of the newly created City of Chicagoterritory. The population grew rapidly following incorporation, reaching 523 in 1920 and 1,045 in 1940 before declining to 899 in 1960 due to high apartment prices and increased competition from other cities within Cook County. In recent years there has been an effort to revitalize the city with new development including several mixed use projects such as Millennium Park which opened in 2001 and Northeastern Illinois University's McCormick Place campus which opened in 2007. Evergreen Park is home to two universities: Northeastern Illinois University (NIU) - which offers undergraduate degrees in engineering and business administration; and DePaul University - one of America's largest Catholic universities with over 19 campuses across Chicagoland - both located within walking distance of each other on Capitol Hill Drive near Northwestern Avenue and Western Avenue respectively. Additionally there areseveral professional institutes including Southern Illinois University Carbondale (SIUC), American Institute for Architects (AIA), John Hopkins School of Medicine (JHMS) as well as numerous cultural organizations including Symphony Orchestra Of Greater Chicago (SOFC) whose headquarters are located on Roosevelt Road just west of Lincoln Highway/ Interstate 90 junction east off I-90 approximately 2 miles south of downtownChicago proper
Evergreen Park was first settled in 1836 by a group of farmers from Illinois. The community grew rapidly, and in 1857, the first school was built. In 1865, Evergreen Park became the county seat of Cook County. The city was annexed by Chicago in 1896, and it formally became a city on December 4, 1898. The population of Chicago reached over 2 million by 1910, and Evergreen Park continued to grow as a result of its close proximity to the city center. However, World War I caused a sharp decline in population; however, the area saw significant growth during the years following World War II as businesses moved into the district to escape production shortages in other parts of America. In 2002, Mayor Richard M. Daley announced plans to merge Evergreen Park with nearby Ridgewoods; this proposal failed to gain approval from City Council members due to opposition from some residents who felt that they had been left out of the loop about the development plans. On November 3, 2006, Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced that he would pursue gentrification plans for Evergreen Park; these proposals were ultimately successful and led to increased property values within the park District.
