Evanston, Illinois is a city in the northwest United States. The population was 24,723 at the 2010 census. Evanston is the home of Northwestern University and many other high-profile institutions. It is also one of the most ethnically diverse cities in America. The first European to visit what would become Evanston was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it Innsbruck after his homeland, Austria. The area that now makes up Evanston was part of the Northwest Territory claimed by Illinois on July 8, 1803, following the Louisiana Purchase from France. The new state had no permanent residents until November 1, 1818 when a group of settlers led by John Hennepin arrived and founded what would become Chicago. In 1836, Evanston became part of Michigan Territory when that state was organized as a result of the Mexican–American War. On February 14, 1840, Van Buren County was created from parts of Cook and Wayne counties – making it one of only two counties in Michigan not set apart as separate townships or villages within their own government entities like Chicago did prior to its incorporation into Ohio as a county on March 8th (the other being Oakland). This change followed an American irregularly appointed grand jury which indicted Washington senator James Krieger for bribery over claims he sold land to a company controlled by Andrew Jackson; Krieger successfully appealed this verdict to the U.S Dred Scott decision (1857), which declared black Americans were not citizens under U.S law and therefore could not own land or be taxed accordingly

Evanston, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 68,883 at the 2010 census. Evanston is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in North America and has a rich history that includes significant contributions from both African Americans and Hispanics. Evanston was founded on October 12, 1837 by Dr. George Washington Evans and his wife Esther (née Hull) as a small town in what is now Kane County. By 1845, Evanston had a population of 1,200 people and became an independent municipality with its own government and school board. In 1847, Evanston joined the Union Army during the Mexican–American War under General John J. Pershing to fight for Mexico against United States forces. After the war ended, Evanston re-joined the Union; however, it stayed politically separate until 1919 when it seceded from Cook County to become its own independent city under Mayor George Biddle (1892-1920). The first black person to serve as mayor of Evanston was James Hinton (1924-1945). During World War II both American and British soldiers were stationed at Camp Blanding near downtown Evanston; this led to increased development around downtown and north central Evanston due to military demand for housing after their leave of absence ended. This growth caused some traffic congestion on Lake Shore Drive which was solved through the construction of expressways such as I-88 in 1962 which connected Chicago with Milwaukee via south suburban Cook County The present day headquarters building of Northwestern University were constructed on land adjacent to Camp Blanding during this time period The costumed character Mister Pogo originated from an advertisement placed by Chasen Shriver's father in 1922 featuring an image of Pogo with exaggerated speech impediment
