The Eisenhower Presidential Library & Museum is located off Michigan Avenue in Evanston and was opened in 1984 with donations from then-President Eisenhower. It contains items related to his presidency such as archives, books, movies and photos. 3. The Illinois Air National Guard Base is located just northeast of downtown Evanston and it hosts many different types of aviation activities both operational and ceremonial.

The United States Air Force (USAF) is the primary aerial warfare service of the United States Department of Defense. It has been in existence since World War II, and is one of the largest and most powerful air forces in the world. The USAF provides a broad range of deterrence, offensive, defense, humanitarian assistance, and international support capabilities to U.S. allies and partners worldwide. The USAF was formed from parts of several wartime military services: the Army Air Forces (AAF), ground forces established during World War I; Navy Aviation; Marine Corps aviation; and Coast Guard aviation. From its foundation until1994 it was organized into three regions: European Command (EUCOM), Asia-Pacific Command (APCOM), and North America Command (NORAD). Each regional command had responsibility for certain portions of the airspace over each continent except for Africa which was under American Central Command responsible for all Africa. In 1994 Congress passed legislation establishing a new Unified Combatant Commands structure that combined all USAAF commands under one umbrella -Air Force Central Support Command effective 1 October 1994. This change resulted in increased emphasis on global operations by AFCC as well as an overall reorganization within DoD that improved efficiency and effectiveness. In 1998 Congress passed another law redesignating AFCC as air defense command effective 1 October 1998 following enactment of National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1999 which placed more focus on airborne homeland security functions including activation of Joint Tactical Air Operations Center/Airmen Strike Wing to provide real-time situational awareness across all domains when engaging irregular threats outside NORAD's control
