Elmwood Park is a small town in the LaSalle County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The community was founded in 1857 by General James Wilkinson and his wife Eliza Barratt Wilkinson as an agricultural outpost on the banks of the Chicago River. Elmwood Park is a village in Kane County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elmwood Park was established in 1871 as a small agricultural town on the southern edge of the county seat of Kane. The first post office was opened in 1872 and the first school in 1875. In 1907, Elmwood Park became a city and had its own police department until 1957. The current mayor is Toni Preckwinkle. The village has been home to many famous people including author Truman Capote and actors John Wayne and Rex Harrison.
Elmwood Park was originally a Swedish Settlement in the early 1800s. The name originated from the Elm trees that grew there. In 1829, the first blacksmith shop in Elmwood Park was established by Ebenezer Horton and his son-in-law, John Blythe. The shop operated for about 25 years before being closed due to lack of business. In 1875, a Lutheran church was built on Elmwood Park's main street. The church became Trinity Lutheran in 1895. In 1907, a new school was built on Elmwood Park's west side by the Methodist Church. It operated until it burned down in 1951. In 1911, Elmwood Park received its own post office which lasted until 1957. In 1934, the original tracks along Main Street were replaced with modern streetscapes which remain in use to this day. Most notable resident of Elmwood Park during this time include President Franklin D Roosevelt and First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt who both lived here while undergoing treatment at Rush University Medical Center between 1933 and 1945; as well as movie star Marlon Brando and his then wife Rita Hayworth (now married to Joe Esposito).
