Elmwood Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The name " Elmwood" derives from the location of three old elm trees on Elmwood Avenue. In 1857, General James Hurlbut donated land to build a village here and named it Elmhurst after his home in Albany, New York. The first post office was established in 1861 and the first settler, J.W. Wright, arrived in 1868. The Village of Elmwood Park was incorporated as a village on November 3rd, 1886 and had a population of 350 residents when it merged with nearby Arlington Heights on February 11th, 1906 to form the present-day Chicago suburb of Elmwood Park. Elmwood Park has been known for its horse racing track which opened in 1922 and hosted many successful races including the 1952 U .S . Open Championship; it also has a golf course (opened in 1923) as well as tennis courts (opened in 1959). There are also several stores located within walking distance of the track including Applebees (-2 miles), Burger King (-3 miles), Dunkin' Donuts (+4 miles), Sears (−1 mile), Wendy's (−6 miles) and KFC (-7 miles). In addition to its racing facilities and shopping areas there are several schools located within walking distance: Science Museum of Illinois at University Park (2 blocks away) offers classes such as physics and chemistry; Edison Schools offers pre-kindergarten through eighth grade; South Side High School provides advanced math/Science courses; Woodlawn Academy provides middle school aged students with an opportunity to pursue music or dance programs as well as academic opportunities such as business/commerce courses etc.. These schools have all contributed to making Elmwood Park one of south side's most popular communities for children

Elmwood Park is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,386 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The town was named for Elmwood Forest near Chicago. First settler Robert Savener bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land around what is now Elmwood Park in 1837. A post office was established at Elmwood Park in 1841, and the name change to Elmwood Park in 1845 after the great fire that destroyed several villages in Northwestern Illinois. In 1865, three men- John Hines (1821-1892), Hiram Storer (1825-1900) and George Stephenson (1792-1858)- organized the first community meeting at which they proposed forming a township within Cook County. They expected to receive assistance from other farmers who also wanted to form a township but were unsuccessful because of disagreements over boundaries between their properties and those of other landowners. In 1870, another group of men - including future Mayor Richard Mott - met to discuss forming a township and received help from local residents until they finally formed an organization on April 20th with a plat filed by developer Isaac Paley that same year: "Elmwood Township". The first election for trustees was held on November 3rd, 1870; all present were elected withstorer as trustee; Hiram Storer served two terms before his death in 1900. When Congress passed the Morrill Act creating public schools throughout America in 1862, Elmwood Park became one of only seven townships within Cook County that did not have its own school district; it became part ofChicago's School District #2 upon its creation on May 1st, 1868.) The original building for which Elmwood Park originally housed the high school still stands today as does most of what remain from that time period including brick buildings on West Eisenhower Road built during World War II as part of Project Alma which aimed to improve housing conditions for German Americans living east of Michigan Avenue after the war ended.. A new high school was erected adjacent to Marshall Field's old administrative building on North Pulaski Street just north of Interstate 94 eastbound exit when he purchased property adjacent to South Shore Drive extending into Evanston Township along Lake Michigan shoreline westward from Kedzie Avenue where he had constructed his large home called Griggs House since getting ridof his farmstead near DeKalb IL about 1888 or 1889 when he married Evalyn Emerson McCormick. Mr Field opened up shop there sometime prior 1890s becoming well known among shoppers across Chicagoland starting about 1908 when he moved downriver someplace else while entrepreneur Harry Mackensen ran things back then at 7 Wacker Drive 2nd Floor until his death suddenly leaving behind problems especially among developers who might build something nice overlooking downtown Chicagoland only later developing it redeveloping it again right next door blocks away
Elmwood Park was organized in 1871 as a town in Addison County, Illinois. The first settler to arrive in the area was John H. Bolling. The town was named after Elmwood Grove, a plantation near Decatur that Bolling bought in 1848. In 1872, the name of the town was changed to Elmwood Park and it became a city on November 3, 1893.
