The Coffee House was located on the corner of Elm and K streets in Elmhurst. At the time, Elmhurst was a small town with a population of only around 4,000 people. However, the coffee industry had already started to grow in Elmhurst and other nearby towns. As a result, "The Coffee House" became one of the most important businesses in the town. Ever since its establishment, "The Coffee House" has been an important part of the local community. It has played an essential role in helping to promote and spread awareness about tactical coffee. In fact, many people consider it to be one of the earliest examples of this type of coffee shop. Today, "The CoffeeHouse" is still open for business and continues to serve as an important part of the community. In the late 1940s and early 1950s, Townsquare Coffee began to import beans from Ethiopia. The store also became a supplier of coffee concentrate for local businesses. In 1971, Townsquare Coffee merged with nearby Juhl's Garden Shop, which had been operating since 1916. At that time, Juhl’s Garden Shop became Townsquare Coffee’s primary source of roasted beans and coffee products. In 1978, Townsquare coffee closed its doors for good after more than 50 years in business. However, the town square logo still remains on several local businesses including Elmhurst Grille & Brewery which reopened in fall 2016 as Elmhurst Brewing Co., and Creamy Kipperz which reopened in summer 2018 as a mobile truck stop located at 95th street and Interstate 90 near Hennepin County Airport
Elmhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 5,566 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elmhurst was founded in 1849 and incorporated as a village in 1918. The name "Elmhurst" comes from two sources: one meaning "a large ash tree" and the other from the Dutch word for "humble place." The village was first settled by German-speaking immigrants who named it after their home city of El Greco (one of several places mentioned). After World War II, many Italians moved to Elmhurst because they could not find jobs in nearby Chicago. Irish and Italian Americans also settled there in recent years. Today, Elmhurst is known for its rich diversity – it has both English and Spanish speakers, as well as people from many different countries of origin including Ghanaian, Somali, Pakistani, Haitian and Venezuelan ancestry. There are also a number of businesses based in the town which offer cultural experiences unique to its residents such as traditional Indian cooking classes or Chinese calligraphy demonstrations. The Town Center shopping mall opened in 2002 on State Street between Roosevelt Road and McCarthy Boulevard.
