Elmhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 8,521 at the 2010 census. It is the largest community in that county by area and has been home to coffee farmers for over 100 years. Coffee beans were first grown in Elmhurst during the early 1800s. The town's first grocery store opened in 1892. Today, Elmhurst is a center for agricultural production and marketing of coffee products throughout Illinois and beyond. The history of coffee production in Elmhurst can be traced back to 1857 when George Kapp acquired a acreage on which he began to grow coffee beans. In 1909, John Crouch purchased land adjacent to Kapp's property and began growing coffeebeans as well. By 1912, both men had retired from their businesses and handed over control of their properties to their children; these days, each family stillowns part or all of the land that constitutes today's Elmhurst Coffee farmstead. In 1916–17 two young men named Harry Heinemann and Alanson Smith started brewing espresso drinks at an old mill on the edge of town with water from a local creek. They called their product "Espresso Harry" after Harry Heinemann's older brother; Alanson Smith was then an eighteen-year-old student at Northwestern University who had connections within Chicago's business community (he later became vice president of First National Bank). Soon afterward they added milk (from nearby cows) to their espresso drink mix and sold it door-to-door across Chicago as "Harry & Friends." The community was founded in 1868 by John Sweeny and James Wacker as a log cabin on the banks of the Kaskaskia River. It grew rapidly after it became an agricultural center, with fruit orchards, grain farms, and dairy herds. Elmhurst's infrastructure included a post office and nine schools. In 1930, Elmhurst incorporated as a village; its first mayor was Willis Hays. In recent years, Elmhurst has seen growth in its industry: it now has two hospitals (one managed by Adventist Health System), five businesses (three manufacturing and two retail), three libraries (two public and one private), four churches (two Baptist/ Methodist/ Presbyterian and one Catholic), six restaurants (four full-service and two casual/ institutional) and five bars (four commercial). The town also has a real estate industry that includes several high-end subdivisions such as Lakeshore Estatesand Country Club Plaza. Elmhurst is located about 20 miles south of Chicago on I-73 near Carbondale.

Elmhurst, Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 14,782 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Elmhurst was Nicholas Sayers who arrived on July 5, 1829. He and his family were among the earliest to populate the town site which he had purchased from John Strothers. In 1835, Isaac Morse moved into a cabin that still stands in the heart of Elmhurst. Morse served as First Postmaster of Elmhurst from 1835 until his death in 1865. In 1847, Jno.[?] Pohl built a house on State Road 50 near today's corner of West 78th Street and Southfield Avenue. That house remains standing as of 2018 and is currently used as an office complex by DTE Energy Midwest Corporation. The first school in Elmhurst was built on this same lot in 1848 by Mrs.? Elizabeth Beattie and her husband Jeremiah Beattie Sr.. A two-story wooden frame building with a belfry added later housed the school until it burned down in 1893. One account reports that when Mrs.? Beattie offered to buy back her school property for $1 she received an offer from Elijah Parish to build him a church on it instead but he declined because he did not want any part of an Episcopal congregation within walking distance of his home (the current St James Cathedral). In 1850, John Crain became owner of about 120 acres (50 ha) north-east of where Elmhurst now stands and west-southwest of Lake Michigan along State Road 50/Lake Shore Drive which connected downtown Chicago with rural areas east and west of the city limits including present day Arlington Heights and Rosemont IL . Crain donated this land to Elmhurst Township trustees for use as township farmland following its incorporation on February 24th,.1851 under new name “Elmhurst” after his home village in Italy (). The original farmstead consisted only of one barn, four cows, six pigs, three horses & three hogs located northeast corner lot facing south between Wabash & Randolph Roads then bounded by East Randolph Rd., Ewing Ave., Wabash Rd., & North Side Rd.; also included were 2 small trees located east side road next door to Nowak’s grocery store; these tracts remain today adjoining N/A lots owned bycurrent owners Josephine? Redmond? According to published records dating back to 1888 there were over 1300 people living within 3 miles (5 km) radius around what is now Elmhurst when surveyors laid out sections for future townships gridlined according to current street names like Dearborn Ave., Woodlawn Ave., Humboldt Ave etc.; however since most existing streets date back before this time their existence has been largely undocumented save for one or two locations herein indicated…..Most current residents are descended from those surveyed early settlers….There have never been any organized efforts made either through Townships or individual citizens groups/citizens themselves specifically attempting/promoting research or identification thereof much less compiling historical evidence pertaining thereto……Governmental recognition would appear thus far be lacking despite ample documentary evidence otherwise extant…………….Much research has been conducted presently thru web sites such as Google Earth which permits detailed examination& comparison across different times periods throughoutCook CountyHistoryofElmhurst
