The Elmhurst Rifle Club was founded in 1892. The club shot at various local rifle ranges until 1906 when they settled on the Elmhurst Shooting Park. The park was their main facility until 1911 when they moved to the present site on Wabash Avenue. In 1913, the club changed its name to the Elmhurst Pistol Club and held its first pistol competition. In 1916, the club changed its name again to the Elmhurst Rifle and Pistol Club and started shooting at local tournaments. From 1916-1920, it held annual summer courses for new members of the club. During these years, many famous shooters from Illinois participated in theclub’s programs including Adolph Hitler and America’s first black police officer Harry Wright (1887-1966). In 1920, after several years of discussion, the Elmhurst Rifle & Pistol Club merged with another organization known as “The Chicago Rifles” to form a single entity that would continue to shoot at local rifle ranges under separate auspices. From 1922-1945, this entity operated as “The Chicago Rifles/Elmhurst Rifle & Pistol Club.” However, due to World War II restrictions on military firearms ownership, this organization ceased operations in 1945 and reverted back to its original name: The Elmhurst Rifle & Pistol Club. Since 1945, there have been several incarnations of The Elmhurst Rifle & Pistol Club that have continued operation at different locations throughout Illinois and Wisconsin. Today, we are proud proponents of muzzleloading firearms enthusiasts who gather together every year for our Annual Meeting which is one of THE most significant events in our hobby! Our mission is still very much alive - To promote muzzleloading Firearms Safety through Instruction and Competition!

Elmhurst was once a small farming community that became a major industrial center in early 20th century Illinois with heavy production of cotton and other agricultural products. The name "Elmhurst" first appears on maps as early as 1814 when it was known as "Hemsworth". In 1837, when Chicago was founded, Hemsworth was renamed Elmhurst after one of its founders, John Elmore Elmquist. By 1860, Elmhurst had become one of the most important cities in Cook County with an estimated population of 30,000 people. However, during World War I Mostel Rubber Company factories were closed due to wartime shortages; this left Elmhurst struggling economically until the late 1940s when industry revived and jobs returned to town. In recent years many high-rise apartments have been built near downtown which have caused traffic congestion around those buildings but have done little to improve infrastructure such as streetlights or sidewalks within the town center which continues to suffer from deferred maintenance problems.

The town was founded on October 15, 1871 by Gustave Beauregard and his brother-in-law David Crouch. The name "Elmhurst" comes from a large Elm tree that had to be cut down in order to begin construction of the first courthouse in the town. According to the 2010 census, there were 11,001 people living in Elmhurst Township (including those living in unincorporated areas), 3,471 households, and 2,914 families residing within the township limits. Of these families 1/3 lived below poverty line with an average household income of $25,512. Out of all residents in Elmhurst Township only 9% are Hispanic or Latino according to Census ACS data while over 60% identify as white AngloSaxon Protestant
