Elmhurst is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 54,895 at the 2010 census. It is the sixth-largest city in Cook County and the largest city within its borders that is not part of Chicago. The Elmhurst community was founded in 1871 when Dutch immigrants, most of whom had arrived from Holland during the American Revolution, settled on a tract of land that now includes Elmhurst and parts of neighboring Garment City and Romeoville. The first school in Elmhurst was built on what is now Wacker Drive. That school was replaced by an earlier building on this site which served as a Middle School until 1945. In 1907, Dr. Julius Rosenwald donated land to create what became known as Rosenwald Park (now part of Forest Hills). This park included many acres of forested area which were used for agricultural purposes until the late 1800s when they were developed into one of Chicagos major commercial areas with several large factories located there including Armour & Company and Bliss Brewery. In 1892-93 three groups of local businessmen organized themselves into what became known as the "Elmhurst Improvement Association". This group unsuccessfully lobbied for annexation by the City of Chicago because they wanted more suburban homes closer to their businesses than those being provided by then-Mayor John Altgeld's plan for downtown redevelopment called "Alpert Plan". After years of fruitless effort, some members decided to move away from downtown and form their own town government within their former parish boundaries instead which they did in 1903 with the name "Elmhurst Township". Their efforts paid off as soon as they applied for incorporation into Chicago on November 3, 1903; however due to lack of funds it took them another year before finally becoming an incorporated city on December 1, 1905 with a population estimated at 20 thousand residents (already larger than any other municipality within Cook County). When World War I ended in 1918 ElMHurst recorded 514 payroll jobs outifts from various plants throughout Cook county totaling $2 million dollars! Many soldiers who returned home found employment opportunities waiting for them but few people knew about these openings due to prohibitionism still alive and well back then! However Prohibition repealed following World War II so many workers found out about job openings available now thanks to new technology! One such new opportunity was working at KFC where you would go up front where all your food came wrapped up like overpriced gift wrap! You would also get your hands dirty serving customers behindthescenes! Who can forget that infamous scene where Ronald Reagan made his famous speech about how much he loved KFC? Of course fast forward forty years and we have President Donald J Trump who visits KFC regularly!! No wonder there are so many restaurants called “KFC” today!!!

In 1945, after the end of World War II, the navy again sent a gift when it donated two submarines, USS Ponce and USS Triton, to Japan in return for their surrender. Since 1990, naval units have participated in humanitarian missions including Operation Restore Hope in Somalia and Operation Neptune’s Spear in Afghanistan. In 2019, Hurricane Florence caused extensive damage to the U.S. Virgin Islands which required over 2 million dollars worth of donations from members of the military and civilian sectors alone. More recently there have been deployments for Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico and Hurricane Irma in Florida. This year marks another significant anniversary for naval Gift History as Admiral Harry Harris (Retd.) becomes Commander-in-Chief Naval Forces Europe (CINFE). CINFE is responsible for both NATO’s maritime assets within European waters as well as American forces operating within NATO’s Eastern flank should hostilities break out between member nations across Europe or Eurasia

It is the ninth-largest community in Kane County and the second-largest community in Cook County. The first settlers to Elmhurst arrived from New York State in 1827. They were farmers who worked on their own land or rented from others. The town of Elmhurst was organized on May 15, 1875, when a group of residents voted to form a government under the auspices of the National Conference of American Women. For many years, Elmhurst served as an agricultural and commercial center for Kane County. In 1907, construction began on what became Chicago's first electric streetcars. This event marked the beginning of Elmhurst's rapid growth and development as a major city center. Today, Elmhurst offers residents access to a variety of recreational opportunities such as fishing, hunting/fishing, golfing, bicycling/walking/running/jogging etc., as well as excellent educational institutions including Northwestern University (the largest private university in Illinois), John Marshall Law School (one of only five law schools in Illinois with Main Street location), Cook County Community College and Stritch University - both private universities - all within walking distance of one another.
Elmhurst was founded in 1855 by John D. Rockefeller and his brother, Edwin. The town is named after Elmhurst Manor, a mansion built by Rockefeller in the 1840s. The manor served as the home of many notable people, including James Buchanan Polk and Franklin D. Roosevelt.
