The name Elmhurst is derived from "Eastman's Grove", a large tract of land that once lay east of the present-day town line and included much of what is now Elmhurst Township and parts of Forest Park. Elmhurst was organized as a village on December 20, 1847. On January 1, 1851 it became an incorporated town after taking over all of Cook County west of the river Elgin from its predecessor Village of Westchester. Elmhurst's first mayor was John Kappler. The townsite was originally home to over 100 Dutch families who had settled there in the mid-19th century during the Famine Years following their expulsion from Holland by Napoleon III in 1854 for rebel activities. They were replaced by Irish settlers in the early 21st century during waves of immigration inspired by new opportunities offered in America following World War I and Prohibition. In 1916, when government assistance to war veterans ended, many residents decided to return to their farms rather than apply for government assistance which would have sent them north into concentration camps like Auburn or Starke County where they would have been difficult to support due to meager resources and high taxes; instead they formed picnicking clubs known as "the greenhorns" around which they socialized while waiting for help with food delivery or other needs (e.g., healthcare). This spirit continued until well into the postwar years as long lines formed outside grocery stores because citizens could not get food that wasn't pre-packaged or canned goods (in contrast today where supermarkets carry everything'). Elmhurst is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 46,521 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Cook County after Chicago. The Elmhurst area has been inhabited by the same people for over 10,000 years. In 1814, one or more Swedes founded a trading post on the banks of the River Des Plaines south of present-day Elmhurst and named it "Emmhurstsburg". The first settlers arrived in 1835 and were led by Captain John Stephenson from Kingston upon Hull, England. He purchased 2 acres (0.8 km2) of land from Nicholas Fenton on November 20, 1835 as part of his purchase of alluvial soil along the river for $4 per acre (1/10th pound sterling). Captain Stephenson named his new settlement "Elmhurst" after Sir James Elmes who had given him leave to settle there. A few weeks later captain Stephenson's party discovered sugar maple trees near what is now First Street and Main Avenue in Elmhurst Township. They began felling these trees and soon found that they were cultivating sugar maple which they sold to local farmers for use as fuel or to make syrup. When they erected their first cabin near where First Street intersects Main Avenue today (now South Park Drive), they also built a barn and other structures which still stand today as part of Elmhurst Historical Society Museum Complex located at 422 North Main Street within walking distance of many businesses including Nordstrom's Department Store, JBG Smith & Co., Sears Roebuck & Co., American Legion Post # 87 and Stritch's Pharmacy Chapel Historic Site; among others The first school in Elmhurst was built on behalf of George Waddell Sr., an early settler who became interested in teaching children while he raised crops on his farmstead northwest of town center but did not have any pupils until he recruited Mr. White to teach school there when white children could not be found nearby or when immigrants arriving during 1840s stopped settling east side streets so private schools could be established There are several theories about why white parents did not send their kids to school with black teachers until after free public education became available through state legislation: some say this was because most African Americans working west side farms didn't attend school due to segregation laws forbidding interracial mixing then; some say white parents felt scared sending their kids away from home would guarantee them work back East; some believe that since most black children living east side were attending daycare/orphanages run by whites before 1940s public schools were unavailable for them either way
