Elmhurst is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,895 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. It is bordered by the city of Chicago on the north, west and south sides; Crystal Lake to the east; and Lyons Township on the northwest. The first permanent settler in Elmhurst was John Pfeiffer who arrived in 1837. He named his land Elmhurst after one of his brother's estates in Germany. In 1839, James Gorman purchased from Pfeiffer and laid out a town square which he named Elmhurst after himself and two other gentlemen friends he had met while traveling through Europe. Gorman's home still stands today on North Main Street within walking distance of many commercial areas including its original post office building (now occupied by Northwestern University). In 1853, George Auld sold his interest in Elmhurst to Elias Howe for $1,500 cash. Howe built a sawmill along streams that flow into Lake Michigan near what is now North Avenue/Dearborn Road and offered lumber to local farmers for their homes as well as business structures such as churches and schools. By 1870, Howe had developed an extensive lumber empire that included mills located throughout central Illinois with branches across Lake Michigan. The company became known as "Howe & Beecham". Elmhurst is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 382 at the 2010 census. Elmhurst is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1856 by parents of Danish immigrants who had come to America as indentured servants. The original name for the town was "Vidner". The first post office in Elmhurst opened on February 14, 1859. The name changed to Elmhurst after the street on which it sat became Elmira Road. In 1872, a waterworks project began and soon Elmshore Drive was filled with homes and businesses; there were no streets or public squares until after World War I when a new market square was built between 95th and 97th Streets. In 1907, two-thirds of the citizens of Elmhurst voted to annex neighboring Ryanville (now Ryanville Township). This annexation increased the size of Elmhurst from its original Bradley Park-sized territory to . In 1914, an expressway called State Route 41 was completed linking Elmshore with other parts of Cook County and created new business areas such as North Side Plaza and West Side Shopping Center along South Elmshire Boulevard. In 1925, following Prohibition efforts by local Republicans against national prohibitionism, Ella Fitzgeralds dance performances at Sears Department Store attracted attention from speakeasies all over Chicago; this led to Club Lindbergh's opening in nearby Lombard Street that year also generating much interest throughout Chicagos Prohibition-era neighborhoods north of Jackson Park Lakefront Drive including near where she would eventually perform her famous show at Wrigley Field 15 years later on October 25th Anniversary performance night! During World War II many factories closed due to scarcity of materials but continued production inside community centers like Factory No 2 which housed munitions workers during war time right up until 1949 when factory closed because it became surplus property again! After that war some people moved back into their prewar homes while others used what land they could still find for housing purposes before demolition started about 1951/1952...This whole process took longer than expected so some people might say that life sucked during those days? But really most folks just got used to things being different kinda way? Anyway thats another story altogether ;)
Elmhurst was founded by the Menomonee Indians in 1778. The town grew rapidly during the 1800s, and by 1846 it had over 1,000 inhabitants. The first post office was established in 1847, and Elmhurst became a city on July 1, 1853. The city annexed neighboring towns of Hollandale and Rome in 1865 and 1870 respectively. In 1907 Elmhurst merged with Rome to form a new city government.
