Elmhurst is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 76,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area. Elmhurst is one of the largest cities in north suburban Illinois. The first settler in Elmhurst was John Davenport, who arrived from Vermont on July 4, 1802. In 1831, Isaac Carpenter purchased 1/4 mile (0.8 km) of land extending along present-day Grand Boulevard from Milwaukee Street to State Street and laid out a town platted as "Elmhurst", named for an early settler's father-in-law (John Emerson). A post office called Elmhurst was established in 1836; it remained in operation until 1872. In 1840, Samuel Morse leased 640 acres (248 ha) of land east of what is now Elmhurst Avenue to John Fenton as part of his effort to build a telegraph line between Springfield and Chicago. When construction began on the line in 1846 and ended two years later, Fenton sold the land back to Morse for $2 per acre ($110 per ha). In 1861–1862 Samuel Woolworth founded the First National Bank at 601 Niles Ave., which became one of America's largest banks outside New York City before being acquired by Jardine Matheson & Co.'s Anglo-American Corporation in 1966. Woolworth Elementary School was built onsite during World War II as a morale booster for American servicemen stationed at Elmhurst Naval Air Station (now Elmhurst Airport), now Joint Base McGuire--Dix Hills Naval Air Station. The school served both military personnel and civilians until its closure in 1969 after only six months due to budget cuts by then U.S. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara; it reopened as South Side Community High School three years later under new leadership with many local citizens contributing money towards its restoration and reopening as one of Chicago's top public schools system wide beginning with 9th grade students starting fall 2006 After more than 40 years without significant changes or updates South Side Community High School has reached its’ midpoint century mark!

Elmhurst, Illinois was founded in 1855 by George Washington Emerson and his wife Harriet. The town gradually grew around the Elmhurst Cemetery, which was established in 1872. In 1896, Elmhurst became a village and was renamed Elmhurst Hills. In 1960, Elmhurst became an incorporated city and has since grown into one of the most diverse communities in Illinois. The early history of Elmhurst is shrouded in mystery. Legend has it that a group of Dutch farmers who were fleeing religious persecution settled in what is now Elmhurst Township during the mid-18th century. It’s not clear how they got there or what they did with their families, but within a few years the area had become known as “Emmhurstsburg” after them. In 1855, George Washington Emerson came to America from Holland to start a new life. He took up farming near Cairo, Illinois and decided to name his new community after himself – “Elmhurst” because he thought it would be well-received by any settlers who arrived. Over time, other residents followed suit with similar namesakes: Westchester (1856), Northchester (1860), Southchester (1862), Clinton (1865), Farmingdale (1868), Auburn Hills (1871) and Deerfield Heights (1875). Despite its initial success, Emerson never found enough people to support him so he sold his land and moved back home to Holland in 1861. Two years later he married Harriet Warner and started again anew on his own farm west of Chicago; however, their only child died soon after birth. The couple divorced shortly thereafter while living at Goodhue Manor near Jacksonville IL before moving back east to Indiana where they met John Atherton Emersons third wife Sarah Jane Sellars on October 1st 1876 when she visited her father at Goodhue Manor while on her way home from visiting her mother in Fort Wayne IL.. They married on November 8th 1880 at DeKalb IL courthouse under the supervision of Judge Solomon Davenport Jr.. With this marriage behind them, Emerson began looking for another location for his community – this time choosing Elmhurst because it had been recommended to him by friends Alexander Bradley & Sons merchants located nearby! The first structure built in what is now Elmhurst Township was the old Methodist Church which was completed in 1865 just south of present day Harrison Road/Route 434A Sqn., although no record exists of its use until that year…. After several years of construction nothing came of plans for an American School which would have served as both educational opportunities for children living within range as well as providing employment for local adults….. Finally opened about 1890 by Mrs J Fechert [sic] as St Clair Female Grammar School serving grades K thru 12…..Mrs Fechert closed school about 1895 when she moved away from town due to social customs against teachers having unmarried children…… Most likely due either to lack of funds or disagreements between parents over proper discipline methods…. By 1907 all public schools were consolidated into one large building called “The Polytechnic Institute” which still stands today across Harrison Rd/Route 434A Sqn from where it once stood! From here students could continue their education outside THE PUBLIC SCHOOL SYSTEM! In 1927 Dr Julius Rosenwald donated land adjacent Charter High School[now charter high school elmhurst] making it possible for students graduating from charters high schools throughout Cook County (& Ill.) To attend University level courses instead Of returning home To teach!!! This event marks perhapsthe beginningOf An eraof Large Scale Technical Schools OpenedInIllinois!!!!! When Dr Rosenwald gifted the property north Of Harrison road/route 434a sqn.,And expansion On That Site Became Possible!! Today We Live In One Of The Most Diverse Citrus Communities IN AMERICA!!!!
