The Elmhurst Gun Museum is a nonprofit museum that preserves and displays firearms from the Elmhurst community. The museum was founded in 1984 by then-Mayor Robert C. Smith, Jr. and current Mayor Tom Barrett. The museum is located on the grounds of the Elmhurst Baptist Church, which was once home to one of Illinois' first black churches. The museum has collections including rifles, shotguns, pistols, ammunition, tools and equipment used in gun culture dating back to 1847. Many of the weapons on display were donated or acquired by individuals or organizations who were interested in preserving firearm history in Illinois. The museum also has a small collection of American Indian guns and shotguns from around Illinois. The Elmhurst Gun Museum currently has over 50 items on exhibit including handguns, shotguns, rifles and bows/arrows. The GUN MUSEUM is open Wednesday thru Saturday 9am to 4pm; closed Sunday

Elmhurst, Illinois is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 67,831 as of the 2010 census. It is the second most populous city in Cook County after Chicago. Elmhurst is located on the eastern edge of Chicago and straddles the border between Cook County and DuPage counties. The name "Elmhurst" comes from two small villages – Elmira and Hawthorne – that once inhabited what is now Elmhurst. The land that became Elmhurst was first settled by Europeans in 1818 when they founded a trading post at what is now Maple Leaf Road and Prairie Avenue. In 1827, John Marshall founded Marshall's Grove Township which included what is now Elmhurst. In 1836, General Andrew Johnson moved his headquarters to Elmburgh Creek on the west side of Chicago while he was running for president. He left behind a garrison of 10 Ulysses S Grant’s infantry soldiers who were quartered at Fort Dearborn (now part of Navy Pier). Johnson gave orders for these men to be dismissed on July 4th when he learned that General McClellan would be campaigning in Illinois against General Winfield Scott’s army near Chicago. On July 5th, 1865, about 12 miles east of present day Elmhurst on I-94 near Lemont Springs, Union general Curtis LeMay discovered an American military detachment consisting largely of black troops under white officers march towards his lines without provocation from their commander Major General George Armstrong Custer just south of Lemont Springs

Elmhurst is a small town located in Cook County, Illinois. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and is adjacent to the University of Chicago. Elmhurst was founded in 1847 by Methodist ministers as a place for religious instruction for their children. It became an industrial center after those ministers developed a water-powered sawmill here in 1852. In 1886, Elmhurst began housing night schools for African Americans and other races. After World War II, its industry dwindled but it remained an agricultural center with dairy and pork production until the late 1960s. Elmhurst has experienced several economic rebounds since 2000, when it lost its status as an agricultural center to suburban Streamwood. However, these successes have not been sustained over time; instead, Elmhurst has seen steady decline in population and jobs since 2000 while also experiencing significant gentrification due to new development near the town limits. The original town site had only 6 residents when it was platted in 1847; by 1900 there were just 12 residents remaining on what is now Elmhurst Boulevard (the current border between Elmhurst and Streamwood). Despite this growth slowdown and loss of jobs in favor of neighboring Streamwood during the past decade or so, some people continue to call themselves "elmhursts" even though they no longer live within sight or sound of their former home town. Many local businesses still remain open despite being less hospitable than they once were: many restaurants serve up 1950s-era food that locals still enjoy despite changes inTimes Square or elsewhere along South State Street (now Wisconsin Avenue).
Elmhurst was founded in 1847 by George Washington Elmhurst, a Congressman from Illinois. The city was named for General James K. Polk, the 33rd President of the United States. Elmhurst became a municipality in 1903 and was annexed by Chicago in 1954.
