Elmhurst,Illinois is a town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 7,879 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Chicago metropolitan area and has a rich coffee history dating back to 1892. The first coffee beans were roasted on October 15th, 1892 by John A. Roemer in his shop on North State Street in Elmhurst. The beans were ground and mixed with water to produce what was then called "Brewster's Coffee". Brewster's Coffee quickly became popular throughout the city and soon found its way into many local cafes as well as individual homes. In 1922, Harry Shapiro opened Shapiro's Coffee Shop in Elmhurst which became one of the most successful businesses in town. Shapiro sold his business in 1951 and it continued to be run by his son until 1991 when it was purchased by Brian Rooney Sr.. In 1993, Rooney Jr., who also ran a small grocery store across the street from Shapiro's Coffee Shop before he died suddenly made an unsuccessful attempt to revive the store which closed down permanently in 2000. However, after years of research and development by descendants of both Brian Rooney Sr./Brian Rooney Jr.'s children (who still own the business), Byrne Bros Brewing Company reopened on May 3rd 2003 inside of old Shapiro’s building adjacent to FirstEnergy Park with plans to give back some of what their father had lost during his time at Byrne Bros Brewery- including a large beer garden that once occupied much of downtown Elmhurst!

Elmhurst is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,693 at the 2010 census. It is located on the banks of the Chicago River. The Elmhurst community was founded in 1847 by farmers who had to move from rural areas around Chicago because of the construction of the Erie Canal. The first post office was established in 1848 and named after American Revolutionary War general General Anthony Wayne. In 1860, a railroad line was built through Elmhurst and it became one of the towns along that line. In 1870, Elmhurst voters passed a resolution asking for annexation by Chicago; this request was accepted and the town became part of Chicago. Some residents voted to secede from Chicago due to their dissatisfaction with Mayor John Puskar's administration; these settlers were known as Maquoketa Township people. In 1920, when Elmhurst merged with other communities near its location on Halsted Street (now Wacker Drive), most residents kept their own names and there were no changes to municipal government or public education until 1974 when City Hall moved into new facilities adjacent to Community Campus North which now houses many local businesses including Pizza Hut and McDonalds restaurants as well as two high schools (Elmhurst Senior High School & Humboldt Park High School). In 1984, Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School opened in what had been an old garage on West Addison Avenue which has since become one of Humboldt Park's most popular shopping destinations for parents looking for affordable child-sized clothing and other related items such as makeup and toys before sending their children off to school each day. In 2007-2008 city officials began planning a $136 million renovation project dubbed "Metropolis" that would convert about three-quarters of downtown Elmhurst into an open-air mall; however those plans have stalled amid lack of funding from city taxpayers while also facing opposition from some business owners who feel they have been taken advantage by city leaders during the redevelopment process
