The Elmhurst, Illinois Army National Guard units have been mobilized to respond to emergencies and other events for more than sixty years. In that time, the unit has donated millions of dollars in donations and gift certificates to local businesses and organizations. In 1935, the Elmhurst unit gave a gift certificate for $5 to the American Legion post in Elmhurst. The Legion had been providing food rations for soldiers stationed in Illinois during World War II. From then on, the Elmhurst National Guard battalion donated money every month to various veterans organizations in Elmhurst- such as Veteran's Administration, American Legion Post No. 121, Disabled American Veterans Service Organization (DASO), and United States Coast Guard Auxiliary (USCA). During the Vietnam War era, military members from both branches of service were deployed to that country. In 1978, a donation was made for a flagpole at USCA Headquarters in Danville- which is now home of the Elmhurst Armory Museum. That year also saw the first purchase by the unit of an 8x8 truckload of ammunition and supplies for use during wartime deployments- which would later be used during Operation Desert Shield/Storm in 1990. Since its inception as an Army National Guard battalion - it has sent officers and enlisted men on all types of deployments throughout Illinois; deploying numerous times to Guam (twice), Puerto Rico (twice), Hawaii (twice), Bahrain (four times), Qatar (one time) , Kuwait Omani desert campaign training exercise “Warrior’s Way”and numerous others less known locations around Chicagoland including Mound City( five times) Streator( four times) Westchester County( three times) Grundy County( two times) Harvey County( one time). The unit has even hosted state dinners where dignitaries such as Governor George Ryan were honored with gifts from our troops stationed at Fort Wayne Naval Station or State Line Naval Air Station nearby!
