Elk Grove is a small town in Cook County, Illinois, located on the north side of Chicago. The population was 362 at the 2010 census. Elk Grove is home to two schools: Elmhurst and Elk Grove High School. Elk Grove was formed from parts of Hoffman Estates and Streamwood in 1887. A post office opened in Elk Grove on November 14, 1888, and remained open until it was discontinued on July 15, 1903. The first store in what is now Elk Grove was built by John Wills in 1892. Elk Grove, Illinois was platted in 1847 and is located in the southern portion of the Chicago area. The city was named for two elks that were killed by a hunter in 1836. The first elk to be killed in Elk Grove was an 8-year-old male. After this event, residents of the area began to call themselves "elk groveters." The city's first stop on the Underground Railroad was here. In 1865, during the American Civil War, Union troops burned down the Elmwood Cemetery in Elk Grove after capturing nearby Fort Dearborn. This event helped spur development around here and has been cited as one of the reasons why Elk Grove became a popular town site for farmers and entrepreneurs during its early years. In 1872, Mayor John Ralston donated land to make into a public park which today bears his name. This donation allowed for further growth around here and has led to many of today's landmarks including Elmhurst University and Illinois State University being located within walking distance of each other! During World War II, Elk Grove served as a training ground for military personnel from both sides of the conflict. One such soldier who spent time here was General George Custer! After his death at Little Bighorn near Fort Riley in 1903, Custer's body was brought back to Elk Grove and interred there alongside those of his unit! Today, ElmhurstUniversity occupies much of what used to be Downtown Elk Grove while Illinois State Univ picnics on campus (and sometimes uses adjacent property). All told, it seems that no matter what direction our town takes or how fast things change (or don't), Elkhorn Park will always have its place within our community!

The first post office was established at Elk Grove in 1848. In 1865, the village of Elmhurst was organized and named for Elmira, New York, which had been the site of a previous Indian settlement. In 1903,the Illinois Central Railroad built a line from Chicago to Rock Island via Elmhurst and other villages in Cook County. The tracks crossed over the river near present-day Elmridge Drive, east of I-71. The railroad renamed its line after Ulysses S. Grant, who had served as president of the United States during much of the 19th century.
