The Elk Grove Coast Guard Station was established in 1917 as the first Coast Guard station in Illinois. The station served as a local firefighting and rescue agency until 1951, when it became a coast guard squadron. In 1971, the squadron was renamed the Elk Grove Coast Guard District. In 1987, the district became a full time coast guard station with its current name. The district is responsible for all of Cook County including Elk Grove, Maywood, Berkeley Heights and parts of Skokie and Lombard. The coast guard has been providing law enforcement services to locals and visitors on the south shore of Lake Michigan since 1922 when officers from neighboring Moline were hired to help patrol that area. In 1951, Illinois Governor Adlai Stevenson appointed Captain John Burton to chair a subcommittee that developed plans for expanding coastal patrols along Lake Michigan’s north shoreline; this led to the establishment of the Elk Grove Coast Guard District in 1971 which has jurisdiction over all of Cook County INCLUDING ELK GROVE! In 1987, after many years of service by Officers and Crew from both Districts our townships were united under one roof with our new Glenn Coaster - an old Santa Fe Railroad passenger train that had been donated by Glenview businessman Haddon Kravis! Elk Grove is a city in Cook County, Illinois, United States. The population was 25,023 as of the 2010 census. It was founded in 1855 by John H. Elk and his family. The city was named for an Elm tree that stood on the original site of the present-day city. The first settler in what is now Elk Grove Village was John H. Elk himself, who arrived there in 1855 from Ohio with his wife and child. The first house in what is now Elmhurst was built by Mr. and Mrs. Elk in 1857; it still stands today within the limits of the city today. At its peak during World War II, Elk Grove had a population of over 50,000 people and contributed $10 million to the war effort; this figure has since been reduced significantly due to economic recession and crime rates which have rose dramatically in recent decades throughout the city's wide area (Elk Grove Village only includes portions of north Chicago). Today, much like many other cities across America experiencing similar struggles during these times, Elk Grove remains an important cultural center for its surrounding community as well as a vibrant commercial district with several large shopping malls located within walking distance of both downtown Elmhurst and suburban locations such as Hoffman Estates and Glen Ellyn. Elk Grove was founded in 1824 by John Fenton and his brother George. The area lay on the banks of the Chicago River, and early settlers were farmers and hunters. In 1854, Elm Creek was named after Elk Grove Township. In 1865, a railroad line was built through the township, and within a few years there were several small mills in the town. The townsite grew gradually as more people moved to the area. By 1907, there were twelve businesses in Elm Grove with a population of just over 200 people. A new water tower was built that year, becoming one of the first municipal buildings in Illinois. Elm Grove's growth continued until World War II when it all but disappeared due to wartime demand for military materials in Illinois and other states.
