Elgin, Illinois is a city in central Illinois. It was founded in 1837 by John Elgin and has been the county seat of McHenry County since 1847. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,871. The city is located on both banks of the Des Plaines River and is bordered to the east by Chicago and to the west by Rockford. The area now known as Elgin was part of what were called "the Great Lakes region" which stretched from Superior, Wisconsin to Joliet and Buffalo, New York. In 1837, John Elgin bought land near present-day Elmhurst on the bank of the Des Plaines River for $2 per acre (0.08 km²). He named his new settlement after his father's home town in Scotland—Elgina (now Edinburgh). The first settler in what would become Elgin was James Weir who arrived about 1840. In 1847, McHenry County was created from portions of Cook County and included most of present-day Kendall County as well as part of today's Elgin Township. At that time there were only a few hundred residents in Kendall County; most residents lived in Cook County or nearby townships. When McHenry County was created,elgins incorporated as a village on December 12th,1847 under charter #1013 from then-County President Daniel Hennepin. In 1865, when General George McClellan's army invaded Illinois during The American Civil War with plans to cross over into Indiana via this valley (then known as Lake Michigan), parts of Kendall and Cook Counties sided with General McClellan while others chose to stay loyal to Abraham Lincoln - leading to much conflict within McHenry County between Unionists and Confederates during The Civil War. Aftermath: Many small farmers had lost their homes due to war damage so 2 adjacent lots were given away for a community center/park & post office building which became known as “McHenry Park” Today’s intersection includes 3 blocks worth total land including 2 streets running through it! It wasn't until 1924 when an expressway connecting Chicago & Detroit opened that Elgin began growing rapidly - becoming one of Chicago's first suburbs (along with Arlington Heights). That same year saw construction begin on what would become McHenry Square - later renamed Prairie View A&M University - making it one of Chicagos largest continuous downtown areas at that time! Today nearly every major company has its headquarters here – including Apple Inc., Comcast NBCUniversal*, PepsiCo*, Wells Fargo* & many more!

Elgin, Illinois is a city in Elgin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,917 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Elgin County and the second-largest city on the Chicago metropolitan area. It lies just north of the Indiana state line and east of Rockford.[2] The site where Elgin now stands was settled by French colonists in 1763 as part of La Salle's Fort Dearborn. Butterfield also founded what is now Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company (later American Express) here in 1848 as well as First National Bank (later Guaranty Trust Company). During World War II Elgin served as an important manufacturing center for munitions producing plants such as Ford Motor Company's Racine plant; Bethlehem Steel Corporation's Joliet plant; Baldwin Aircraft Inc.'s Grumman Aircraft Division; United States Rubber Co.'s Plant No. 1; and US Naval Ammunition Depot No. 2 at Cedar Point Park near downtown Elgin[4].
