The Illinois National Guard was originally organized on November 15, 1861 as the Illini Guard. It grew rapidly over the next few years and by 1865 it had become an all-volunteer force of about 30,000 men. The Guard entered into Union service on April 12, 1866 and fought in the American Civil War under General George Armstrong Custer. The Guard received a Medal of Honor for its actions during the Battle of Gettysburg. After the war, the Guard continued to grow and by 1872 it numbered over 120,000 men. On July 8, 1872 President Ulysses S. Grant ordered that all volunteer forces be mustered out at once and the Illinois National Guard was disbanded effective that day. The original Army Ordnance Corps barracks located in Elgin were used by the Illinois National guard until they were sold to local farmers in 1934 and became known as “Elgin Armory”. In 1957 they were donated to Elgin University who continue to use them today as their main gymnasium and stadium.
As a nation, we have an important responsibility to provide for our citizens. The National Guard is one of the most important assets that we have and I believe that it should be used in a responsible way. The National Guard should not be used as a cheap replacement for real security patrols or as a tool to harass innocent civilians. In fact, they should serve as an last line of defense against any potential threats to our safety. The use of the National Guard in this way should not come without some consideration. For example, how can we ensure that these officers are trained properly and that they use their skills responsibly? How can we make sure that they are held accountable if they do something wrong? There are many questions that need answers before using the National Guard in this way, but I think that we can get started by coming up with some proper guidelines. In my opinion, the best way to use the National Guard is to create an effective unit that can handle serious tasks such as crime prevention or search and rescue operations. It would also be helpful if we could train these officers in specific techniques so that they can more effectively handle their duties. All of these things will help make sure that our Guardsmen are able to do their job safely andeffectively.

Elgin, Illinois is a small town in the northwestern corner of Illinois. The population was 12,868 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Elgin County and home to the University of Elgin. The first Europeans to visit what is now Elgin were fur traders in 1813. In 1817, John C. Fremont explored this area and named it for George Washington Elgirdale (1763-1847), an Englishman who had helped lead British forces into North America during the Seven Years' War. The name "Elgirdale" likely referred to a meadow near where present day Elmira Avenue crosses Elk Creek. In 1819, General James K. Polk sent troops to aid David Ralston in suppressing a slave insurrection in Canada; when they arrived in this area they discovered that there were no Indians around and decided to name the town after General Polk himself rather than Ralston or any other individual involved in their suppression operation. They called it "Kirkland". Another early settler was Gideon Welles (1800-1865). He purchased 640 acres northeast of present day Elmira Avenue and built a log cabin on it which he named Wellesley House after his friend Weld Emerson (1798-1867), one of American independence's most vehement opponents as well as an abolitionist politician from Massachusetts whose house still stands today on Wellesley Avenue NE within walking distance of Kirkland College’s buildings which are also known as Wellesley Village dwellings dating back to 1795–1830 original architecture by Samuel Sloan from Philadelphia’s Second District under construction by Ebenezer Howard heirs among others between Two Rivers Lock & Key just north east across from old post office building on State Street NW [now Denny’s restaurant] about two blocks SW corner First Ave.—the first brick house on Elmira avenue—the long street running due south then turning east about one block before intersecting secondavenueNW thence continuing due east about three blocks past old station buildings [now apartments] then entering Elmira avenue SE
The National Guard has been a part of the United States since its inception. The first national guard unit was called the Massachusetts Militia and it was organized on July 24, 1776. The militias were used as reserve forces for the Continental Army during the American Revolution. In 1816, Congress created the Department of War to organize and arm state militias. On July 15, 1861, Lincoln called up all U.S. militiamen in order to support Confederate forces in the Civil War. In 1865, after Union troops overran Georgia’s capital city Atlanta, General James Ewell ordered all available National Guardsmen across the South to march into Savannah to take control of that city. One hundred and fifty thousand soldiers from around America fought in the Civil War and many died doing so. Afterward, many states began calling up their own militias for service in time of war or emergency; this led to what is known as “the national guard program” which lasted until 1952 when all military reservists were re-domesticated into permanent duty within the armed services under Title 10 of The United States Code (“the code”). Today, there are more than 150 million active duty and Reserve members of the National Guard throughout our country; these members play an important role in society by providing critical resources when needed most such as security at home and abroad; protecting vital infrastructure including airports and bridges; guarding federal facilities such as courthouses and White House visitor centers; helping with law enforcement duties including response to riots or other emergencies; participating in events such as parades or Memorial Day ceremonies; serving on local government councils where they can impact public policy through their voice and votes; training emergency response teams (ERTs) for various purposes such as natural disasters or terrorist threats etc.; supporting First Responders during Blue Angels airshows or major sports events etc.; providing support functions at military installations overseas especially during deployments such as Operation Neptune Spear or Operation Desert Storm]; rendering aid during natural disasters like hurricanes Katrina or Maria etc.; conducting research projects at universities etc.; playing a key role in American democracy by electing officials who will make decisions affecting our citizens’ lives
