Coffee is a beverage that originated in Elgin, Illinois. In 1824, Nicholas Pappalardo founded the first coffee house in the town and it was called The Coffee House of Nicholas Pappalardo. In 1829, Giovanni Fratelli opened his own coffee house and named it Fratelli's Coffee House. In 1830, John Deverick opened the first grocery store in Elgin and he sold coffee beans to customers. By 1835, there were six coffee houses in Elgin with over eighty-five customers. In 1836, Elijah White opened White's Brewery and he began selling coffee drinks. By 1840, there were ten coffee houses in Elgin with over one hundred customers. During this time period,Elijah White also began importing French press machines from Paris which gave him an advantage over his competitors. In 1847-48, George Ruggles bought the Fratellis Coffee House and renamed it The Peet's Coffee House after its owner, Colonel William Peet Sr.. From then on until 1861 when it was purchased by James McNiven Jr., The Peet's Coffee House was the only business open during daylight hours for citizens of Elgin except for government services like post office or library opening times which were announced through peals of bells at 5 p.m.. It closed down on October 15th 1861 due to an epidemic that struck town causing widespread unemployment among its citizens as well as difficulty getting goods into town because of high prices charged by local merchants for transportation to their stores outside of town). Elgin is a city in the Elgin County, Illinois, United States. The population was 24,635 at the 2010 census. It lies on the site of a large and important early European fur trade post that served as an outlet for Native American traders and settlers. The downtown area is one of the largest in Illinois. Elgin is a town in McLean County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,527 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of McLean County. The town was founded in 1848 by James Elgin and has been named for him since then. The first school in Elgin was built on the east side of what is now Main Street in 1848. In 1860, a new school building was erected on the west side of Main Street; this structure served as the town's first courthouse from 1851 to 1865. In 1871, John Ransom donated land to establish a public square near the center of town; this square became known as Ransom Park. That same year, also, John Fenton donated land to create a park within Elgin limits; this park later became known as Elmira Park. In 1902, Wm. Hulton donated property to become an agricultural extension office within Elgin limits; this office served as headquarters for many years until it moved to Galesburg in 2000. On July 1, 1907 – just two months after World War I ended – Elgin became one of seventy-eight municipalities (including Rock Island and Des Moines) incorporated into the Chicago metropolitan area under Chicago Municipal Code No. 107A[1]. This act created "the city of Chicago", which included all but three of Cook County’s nineteen townships[2], including Elgin[3]. When World War II began on December 8th 1941,[4] residents of all but one township–Rock Island–joined forces with those living in Chicago and other surrounding municipalities to form “the National City Government†pursuant toChicago Municipal Code No 117(a)[5]. Accordingly, on February 20th 1942 when “an emergency order [was] issued by Mayor Edward Jaffe authorizing full mobilization for war purposes…all citizens were required by ordinance or regulation…to report for military service at their places of employment even if they had no intention or ability so to serveâ€[6], all males over sixteen years old were called up and must have gone into military duty within sixty days regardless of whether or not they had taken any formal training or qualifications related thereto[7]. From that moment forward until 1945,[8], eligibility for election as mayor (or equivalent) depended exclusively upon membership in the “National City Government†and participation therein during wartime.[9][10] On November 14th 1951,[11] local resident Wilbur Kukla organized a Citizens' Committee To Oppose The Use Of Atomic Bombs In Korea And Other Matters Within The Limits Of Township One Hundred Seventy-Two (now part OFDEL), concurrent with plans being made by Mayor Edward Jaffe To Use Atomic Bombs Against North Koreans In retaliation For Their Alleged Bombing Of South Koreans And civilian targets inside our own boundaries . . . accordingly on January 2nd 1952 members from Township One Hundred Seventy-two assembled at Community Church located near White Sulphur Springs Road adjacent TOO along WITH THE INTENT AND PURPOSE OF OBTAINING INFORMATION CONCERNING THE USE OF A LAND THAT WAS OWNED BY ONE OR MORE CONVENTIONAL CITIZENRY IN PARTICULAR RESPECT TO THE MURDER OF A MAN WHO WAS AN OFFICER IN THE ARMY RESERVE RETIRED FROM HIS EARLY YEARS AS A SCHOOL TEACHER AT ELGIN HIGH SCHOOL….DEMAND FOR INFORMATION NOT BEING ABLE TO BE SATISFYED CONTEMPLATED ANY TYPE OF PUBLIC MEETING OR PUBLIC ACCESS TO DOCUMENTS RELATING TO THIS MATTER…..
