The history of the United States Army gift history is a long and varied one. From the Revolutionary War through World War II, the army has been involved in many gifts to civilians and military personnel alike. One of the earliest military gifts to civilians was an artillery piece known as an "army mortar." These pieces were gifted to local militias by Major General George Washington in 1775. The first major gift given to an entire regiment of infantry soldiers was a cannon battery on Christmas Day, 1814. This gift represented a significant change for the army because before then all troops were sent out with only handguns and muskets. With advances in technology over time, military gift history can be traced back to 1899 when Colonel John Davenport gave a field artillery piece named "Hercules" to the 3rd Ulysses S. Grant Brigade at Fort Leavenworth Kansas Territory during their tour of duty there. This particular Gift is often recognized as one of America's earliest military gifts to civilians. In 1907, General Pershing presented Admiral Dewey with two cannons worth $1 million each as part of his appreciation for services rendered during World War I including Operation Overlord which led to America's victory over Great Britain. Many famous generals have been recipients of Gifts from civilian donors including Dwight Eisenhower (1941), Ulysses S Grant (1865), Franklin D Roosevelt (1945), Lyndon Johnson (1963) and Barack Obama (2009). The Elgin and Sugar Land Volunteer Infantry (E&SGVI) was a regiment of the Union Army that served in the American Civil War. The regiment was organized on December 12, 1861, at Elgin, Illinois. The unit fought in the Battle of Pea Ridge and other engagements during the war. On October 20, 1865, the E&SGVI was disbanded at Cairo, Illinois.
Elgin, Illinois is a small town located in Sangamon County, Illinois. The population of Elgin was 9,638 at the 2010 census. The community was named after General James H. Elgernon who fought in the Mexican-American War and was brevetted Brigadier General by Ulysses S. Grant. The first settler in present day Elgin was John McKnight who arrived there in 1836. In 1843, David Dixon settled in what is now downtown Elgin with his family. By 1865, all of Sangamon County had been organized into six townships: Pleasant Grove, Carbondale, Elmwood Park, Seward Park (now a part of Urbana), and Terre Haute. In 1872-73 during the American Civil War (1861-1865), many soldiers from Illinois were stationed at Fort Dearborn on the west side of Chicago River where they began to build up a garrison for future war efforts against Mexico. Some residents of nearby Carbondale formed a Committee to erect an artillery battery on their own lot which became known as Battery McGowan’s (later renamed Fort Dearborn). On November 7th 1870 Samuel Gist founded Gist & Gist Land Company with $5200 worth of land that he purchased from Nicholas Bicknell east of what is now South Elm Street and Beech Avenue in Bloomington Township near where the Quad Cities Airport now stands Just before Christmas Eve 1871 through December 5th Elgin merchants and others gathered around the fire built by Mr Fenton at his house on First Street when special messages arrived from Washington announcing Lincoln’s assassination and proclamation stating “All men are created equal” This setting for public works may have been influential in inspiring early settlers to settle permanently within what would become modern day Elgin On January 2nd 1872 Wm Duffy set out for La Salle County arriving two days later at Elkader about 36 miles northwest of Chicago He started trading goods he brought back with him including flour and bacon which he stored along the way until he reached Prairie du Chien A post office/grant office was established at Duffy’s Trading Post near present day West Side Highway and Main Street on January 5th It served as both an outpost for traders traveling between La Salle County and Chicago as well as receiving mail from other settlements throughout Cook County . On January 10th it also received its first delivery - three packages containing clothing measuring 20 feet wide x 12 feet long x 6 inches deep each - destined for Moline IL From this point forward Duffy’s Post grew into one of most important points along the road connecting La Salle County with Chicago
