The history of the Elgin Army National Guard can be traced back to 1872, when two Illinois volunteer companies, the 1st battalion and 2nd regiment, were organized as a military organization under the laws of the United States. The unit was designated as Company A, 1st Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry. On November 15, 1872, at White Sands Arsenal in New Mexico Territory, Captain George Atchison organized Company B (1st Regiment) of this same unit from men who had deserted from General Ulysses S. Grant’s army during the Mexican-American War. The company was reorganized on December 12th and redesignated as Company A (2nd Regiment), 1st Regiment Illinois Volunteer Infantry. On July 14th 1886, at Madrid Springs in Harrison County Ohio Territory, Captain C.W. Ladd formed and captaincy was given to Lieut.-Colonel John H. Ahlborn Commanding Company I (1st Battalion) of this same unit which he also had reorganized from men who had deserted from General Ulysses S. Grant’s army during the American Civil War while serving with Brigadier General Frank Pomeroy’s brigade on campaign against Lee Jackson’s Confederate forces near Petersburg Virginia on April 9th 1865; after Jackson had been defeated at Appomattox Court House; Captain Ladd led his company in an attack against Jackson’s forces that resulted in one man being killed and five officers and men being captured including Lieutenant Colonel Ahlborn; afterwards Ahlborn served with Brigadier General John Jumper’s brigade until ordered by Maj.-Gen James Hinton to return home due to illness; he then rejoined his old company commander “AHLBORN ON THE CAMPSITE WITH HIS COMPANY IN JULY OF ‘86″ Captain Ladd died on October 16th 1888 at Cairo Arkansas after a long battle with cancer while commanding Company I (1st Battalion) of the Elgin Army National Guard
