Their son John married Sarah Elizabeth Shurtleff (1852-1921), daughter of attorney Samuel Shurtleff and widow Hannah Gorham, in 1865. In 1881 Effingham had 1 post office with a population of 54 residents; it closed in 1907 due to lack of mail service. In 1901effingham had 2 businesses: J M Lumber Company with 38 residents and H Armstrong & Sons Hardware Store with 10 residents The first schools were opened in Effingham when one school committee donated land to that effect on November 15th, 1837 There were 3 schools until 1861 when one school committee donated land to that effect again One more school committee donated land to that effect on October 27th 1861 bringing the total number up to 4 schools By 1870 there were 12 students attending these 4 schools In 1886 there were 16 students attending these 4 schools . In 1893 there were 20 students attending these 4 schools . From 1895 until 1899 Effingham's only commercial building was ALCOA flour mill which failed within 3 years because it didn't have enough customers
