As part of Operation Barbarossa (the Nazi invasion of Russia), military engineers built several large facilities in Effingham including two wharves which are still used today as commercial docks. One Wharf was originally used for loading barges with supplies before being converted into an air-raid shelter during World War II; it remains one of effingtons few preserved historical landmarks today! Effingham is an unincorporated community in Effingham County, Illinois, United States. The population was 538 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Carbondale– Evergreen Park Metropolitan Statistical Area. Effingham was laid out in 1836 by John David Effingham and named for him. The first post office was established in 1839, and the town site was surveyed in 1840. A log cabin was built here in 1841 by Isaac Dunham, who also founded Dunhams Grove nearby. In 1847, Effingham residents raised money to purchase a sawmill from Anthony Deacon and commenced operations that year. They continued operation until 1865 when it closed because of financial difficulties. The mill building still stands and is used as a commercial center today. The original sod schoolhouse (which burned down in 1945) is still standing near the intersection of Sully Road and Oldfield Road; it served as a meeting place for local farmers prior to its conversion into a public library in 1959. Effingham also has one contributing farmhouse on Sully Road that still stands today and has been used as a museum since 1978-. In 1909, two brothers named Edwin Pritchard opened up what became known as Pritchard's Market which operated until 1912 when they moved their business to Carbondale. That same year saw the opening of the first post office west of Chicago—Effingham—and by 1916 there were nine businesses operating here including four stores, three hotels, two grocery stores, six carpenters shops and twelve blacksmiths shops all under one roof! By 1923 there were thirteen businesses with over 2200 employees! In 1930-1931 Effingham had its own electric streetcar line which ran from Carbondale to Edwardsville with stops at several other villages along the way! The post office closed on November 9th 1932 due to low mail volume but reopened on December 1st after being relocated from Edwardsville to Carbondale through legislation passed by then Governor George Ryan! On January 4th 1933 Effingham had its first telephone line established via leased lines from Sears Roebuck & Co.—one of only two such services offered at that time outside Chicago! In 1935-1936 effingham got its own radio station KRLD broadcasting on 95 degrees latitude MHz!
