Edwardsville is a small community located in metropolitan Chicago, Illinois. It is bordered by the city of LaGrange to the south and west, and Edwardsville proper to the north. The population was 11,878 at the 2010 census. Edwardsville is one of two towns in Kane County that are included in the Chicago Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). The first settlers in what is now Edwardsville were farmers who arrived from Kentucky during the early 1800s. By 1836, there were two stores and four families living here. The town was named after General James Edwards, who fought with General Winfield Scott at battles near Vicksburg and Chickamauga. A post office was established here on December 1, 1837, and served until it was discontinued on January 8th, 1838. A store opened here on October 14th of that year which would become known as J&J's Grocery & Tavern. In 1847-48, a sawmill was built in this town by John Cramer and later bought by Nicholas Larkinauer. Larkinauer improved it greatly but died before he could complete it; his son continued to work on it for many years until 1975 when it closed down due to factors like overuse and neglect. In 1907-08, Edgar Schieffer opened a grocery store in this town which became an important local center for food distribution until 1978 when KFC moved into its current location adjacent to the high school campus across from Central Park West Mall. On February 17th of 1903 – just three weeks after Prohibition began – General Edward Jenty pulled up stakes from his home near Decatur Avenue & State Street in Edwardsville with some other soldiers called "theWild Billies" because they had no real idea what they were doing when they got there – only that they needed somewhere to stay while their unit underwent training at Washburn Arsenal east of downtown Chicago under command of Major John Gibbons (later famous as Commandant John Haggerty). They founded what would become known as "The Ghetto" or "The Ford Strip". This wasn't really a ghetto per se since everyone did coexist within walking distance of each other but rather a temporary encampment where men could sleep without fear of being robbed or worse nightmarish experiences common among troops engaged in open warfare against America's most powerful military force ever assembled! Drinking water came not from wells but from buckets filled with scoured dirt! Electricity didn't come until 1933 so cooking services were provided by burning natural gas held up outside by civilians! There weren't any toilets available so guys had to use whatever facilities nearby were available including public toilets right next door at Central ParkWest Mall!... For entertainment purposes we gathered around fires all day long playing music out loud or reading newspapers etc... life felt pretty good compared to what things must have been like back then for many people! As America entered World War I major changes occurred starting with President Woodrow Wilson signing Executive Order 9981 giving federal permission for states enter into war providing resources such as manpower/ materiel/aid etc…..On April 15th 1917 USA enters World War I (WWI) becoming allies with Great Britain (& France)….Edwardsville becomes an official US Military Base………………… On November 11st 1918 President McKinley signs order dissolving WWI Armistice….Edwardsville falls back into obscurity………………….. Other early settlers included Nicholas Hixon and his family who arrived around 1840; Wm Hixon and John Pritchard who arrived about 1845; Elisha Cooke who settled about 1850; Ebenezer Higginbotham who came about 1860; Daniel Webster carried out plans for a canal through what are now Springfield and Centralia when he served as Commissioner of Public Works under President Andrew Johnson in 1865-1867; George Stephenson made surveys for a railroad through what are now Peoria Heights and Normal Park in 1868-1869.; James Cameron settled near present day Dixontown around 1870.; Samuel Winchester came to the area soon after that.; Lorenzo Dow became interested in farming hereabouts about 1880s.; Moses Brown moved into this area about 1890s.; Drury Lane Estates were developed hereabout 1900s., but declined due to water shortages caused by agricultural improvements such as irrigation systems brought over by immigrants during that time period In 1905–1907 Edward S.
